Write Like You Mean It! Learn to Communicate in English on a Professional Level

Writing effectively in English is a skill that will benefit you throughout your career—and in your personal life as well. This course covers reports, emails, presentations, proposals and other business communications based on relevant samples as well as real-world projects you have to produce for work. The emphasis is on clearly saying what you mean and giving your audience the information they need, in vivid phrasing that keeps them reading and responsive.
Write Like You Mean It! will appeal most to students that already have a good grasp of English and wish to reach a professional level in their writing.
Note: The instructor is used to working with nonnative speakers of English, particularly in Japan.

I'm a native Californian but have lived in Japan since 1981, mostly in Tokyo. I've been writing and editing since 1979, starting in the U.S. as a technical writer and editor.
Education
Graduated from California State University, Long Beach, with a degree in English (creative writing) in 1978. Completed the Stanford Professional Publishing Course in July 1988. Passed level two of the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test in December 1994.

Experienced in the publications field from initial draft to final print, including the digital publishing environment. Have written and edited collateral materials and manuals for major manufacturers and written stories for Japan Airlines’ inflight magazine Winds, CompuServe Magazine, Step-By-Step Graphics, Applied Arts, The Magazine, Intersect Japan, and Reader’s Digest (advertorial). Have produced ads and promotional copy for Suzuki, Pentax, Konica, Honda, Canon and other major corporations. Magazine editor for several publications in Japan.
Other projects have included Kodansha’s Japan: An Illustrated Encyclopedia and a manga adaptation of Patrick Lencioni’s The Five Dysfunctions of a Team (2008). Coauthor of More Than a Baseball Team: The Saga of the Vancouver Asahi (2012). Former editor of Highlighting Japan (a Cabinet Office publication). Have edited a few dozen books as well, on topics ranging from living in Japan to politics to technology to real estate and beyond.

Responsible for all print and electronic communications the ACCJ produced. ACCJ communications vehicles included three websites (www.accj.or.jp, member.accj.or.jp, and www.livinginjapan.info) under staff control, a fourth branded site done in partnership (www.ecentral.jp), various books (including the 2002 and 2004 editions of Living in Japan), brochures, and yearly publications such as the Chamber’s membership directory and annual report. Supervised two other staff members as well as seasonal interns; also acted as primary liaison between the Chamber and the Communications Advisory Council and various strategic partners and vendors.
