English literature is a creative and academically enhancing subject which opens up limitless modes of thinking. Within the class I will focus on close analysis, reading a wide range of literary texts (from classics to contemporary novels) as well as working on essay writing techniques. I believe that with the right guidance and skills, English literature can be transformed from “boring” to a topic you thoroughly enjoy !

I am a 21 year old student, studying English literature at Manchester university. I love to be out in nature, spending time with my friends and I am a huge animal lover ! Reading has been a passion of mine for my whole life and I found books to be a way of delving into my imagination and ideas. However, despite always loving literature and reading, I haven’t always found it the easiest academically. With anxiety I often had to create my own learning style to adapt and thrive in school, using cgp books to make my own flash cards with rhymes or random mnemonics. Now I am much more confident and thriving, having just got a first in my second year of my course. It’s my aim to help others achieve the same ! I would be completely on board to look at specific texts students are interested in and even graphic novels (as I am a big fan of them myself, especially fun home by Alison bechdel) so feel free to take the lessons in whichever direction best serves you. I hope to meet you soon !

What are the conditions for success in the Modern Letters and Classics course in high school?

The student must know how to avoid 5 prohibitive pitfalls:

- the "off topic"
- the "wrong way"
- the "paraphrase"
- gossip "
- "impertinence" (the speech lacks meaning)

The student must also meet the following requirements to obtain the average:

- identify the theme of the text.
- identify the author's thesis.
- know how to construct a problem to avoid "paraphrasing".
- know how to find a guideline and build a detailed plan to avoid falling into "chatter".
- know how to use all the resources of the syntax and the conjugation of French to write a comprehensible and relevant speech (to be able to explain an idea, an intuition, even a feeling).

I offer tutorials and methodology courses using the following tools:

Understanding what makes a powerful and effective essay is a key part of writing and nailing those exams up ahead. My lessons will involve reviewing my student's writing and working together to find elements that need improvement. We will focus on essay planning, cohesiveness, originality, and exam technique. My sessions will not be lectures and require active participation and effort from myself and my student. If needed, I will set small amounts of homework to encourage even more progress.

During my final years in school, I was responsible for leading tutoring sessions for younger year groups, and provided one-on-one tutoring for several of my A-Level classmates. I also achieved the top mark in the world for OxfordAQA English Literature in my 2023 A-Levels.
