These classes aim at people who want to develop their Portugueses skills, both from scratch with some previous knowledge. The pedagogical structure is adaptable to the situation; school-aged children with Portuguese parent(s) who don't always have the time and opportunity to teach them, adults who need practical advice and relatively quick skill training because of a Portuguese-speaking partner, friend, traveling, etc...
Students are always encouraged to develop their interest in the Portuguese language.

Présentation
I'm a professional musician, having studied organ and harpsichord in Amsterdam and Hamburg.
I came to the Netherlands in 2016 looking for a high-quality Higher Education in Musical performance, which I have found indeed.
In these last years, I've maintained close contact with Portuguese culture, through my frequent travels back home in Portugal, in a village near Porto, through my manny Portuguese friends and colleagues here, and through my own background, habits, and traditions.
At the same time, I've grown fond of Dutch culture, gaining interest if the History of the Netherlands, and learning the language.
I have always had a great interest and passion for History, Language, Literature, Ethnography and Gastronomy, and, of course, Music, with a natural proclivity for my native land, Portugal. I hope to share this passion with as many people as possible.

De echte Portugese ervaring!

Advantages of learning a new language:

Learning a new language is fun. But what I’m (and you should be) after is not bilingualism but instead biculturalism. We think by aid of words. Therefore language shapes thought. In part this is because working in a second language slows down the thinking. No wonder people feel different when speaking a second language. And no wonder they feel looser, more spontaneous, perhaps more assertive or funnier or blunter.
Studies show that being able to speak another language is generally linked to a more flexible brain, developing the brain’s ability to plan and prioritize. Also it betters our defenses against dementia in old age.

Advantages of learning Portuguese:

• 250 million native speakers worldwide
• 5th most common language in the world
• It has been an official language since 1297
• It’s usage is spread over 4 continents (Europe, South America, Africa, Asia)

Now business,

For the past 5 years I've had more than 50 students and based on experience I recommend the following lesson duration (minutes):
Age gap 0-6 | 7-12 | 13-17 | 18-45 | 45-64 | 65+
Duration 30 | 30-45 | 45-60 | 60 | 60-45 | 45-30

Focus on diverse subjects is possible, for example, grammar, diction, reading comprehension, written production, conversational skills. Because the goal of most students is the ability to communicate, I’ve been developing my classes that way. I have acquired extra audio media specially for you :) to hear Portuguese being spoken at a different pace, accent and voice tone.

My method is based on a book (that I myself bring to the class and the student doesn’t need to acquire) which I'm fairly familiar by now. But what I really like is to talk to the student. So the book will be used to present the gramatical structure of the language while also serving as an inspiration platform for conversation topics.
Periodically we will evaluate how the classes are evolving so as to rapidly and effectively shift focus to where it is needed.

1. What is the TOEIC?

The TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) is a language test developed by the Educational Testing Service (Princeton, USA). It measures/demonstrates the language skills that everyone in today's multinational work environment needs to communicate successfully in a foreign language.

2. Who uses the TOEIC?

The TOEIC test is one of the most widely used English-language tests in the world, with more than 14,000 organizations and universities in more than 160 countries relying on TOEIC scores to make important decisions.

3. What is the TOEIC used for?

The TOEIC is used to help organisations to:
• Select, hire, and/or promote their employees based on their level of English
• Select employees with adequate English language skills to participate in English language programs or training.
• Standardize the level of English language proficiency within the company.
Universities and other higher education institutions use this test to:
• Accept prospective students into their English-speaking undergraduate and graduate programs
• Measure their students’ progress
• Issue an internationally recognized English language certificate to their students.

4. How can I help you?

• I will evaluate your English proficiency level
• I will introduce you to the format and structure of the test: remember, knowing the type of tasks is half the battle!
• I will provide you with a lot of exercises and materials, and we will practice a lot
• Depending on your needs, we can focus on the Listening and Reading Test, the Speaking and Writing Tests, or both
• During the preparation, if you get to an area that is going harder, then we will do more exercises related to it or them (grammar, pronunciation, listening comprehension).
