As the official Faculty Proofreader for the Institute of Philosophy at the KU Leuven, I have developed a deep understanding of the common struggles both professors and the wider student body face with respect to academic writing. Whether it be formal and linguistic errors or stylistic, structural, and argumentative issues, I gathered practical tools students can systematically employ to improve their academic writing—skills which coincide with the demands of a tutoring job. I’ve designed this course as the ultimate guide to academic writing, but that’s not it. Given my experience in debate clubs in Leuven, Brussels, and Munich, as well as in hosting highly successful discussion groups with students of all stripes, I can also teach you how to deliver fantastic presentations and get your point across in the most articulate manner. As a polyglot, I can give you examples in Arabic, Farsi, Urdu/Hindi, Punjabi, and German, so if you speak any of these languages, I’ll make sure you have an easier time learning English with me. With this course, I can teach a beginner how to speak English fluently but also creatively, I can teach an intermediate speaker how to take their language skills to the next level, and I can help an advanced English speaker sharpen their presentation skills and academic writing.

About Me
Greetings. My name is Waseem. I have been studying philosophy—with additional coursework in anthropology, psychology, theology, history, and world literature—at the University of Leuven in Belgium since 2017. To further deepen connections with the student body and translate my appreciation for the university’s academic culture, I am working to expand its operations by creating “Present or Perish”—a forum that enables exchange of ideas within the methodologically diverse cohort of (under)graduate students, offering them a platform for continuing conversations left unfinished in class. Herein, I have arranged visits by several senior researchers, including a professor, facilitating interactions across the academic hierarchy. I have developed strong interpersonal and communication skills through extensive experience in public speaking, having debated for several years in debating societies in Leuven, Brussels, and Munich.

I currently work as the official Faculty Proofreader for the Institute of Philosophy at the KU Leuven. As this year’s HIW Faculty Proofreader, I developed a deep understanding of the common struggles both researchers and the wider student body face with respect to academic writing. Whether it be formal and linguistic errors or stylistic, structural, and argumentative issues, I gathered practical tools students can systematically employ to improve their academic writing—skills which coincide with the demands of a tutoring job.

In our lesson, you can expect getting to know me, as I would like to get to know you. Committed to working any day or time of the week, I am a firm believer in seeing tasks to completion. So if you'd like to get in touch for a lesson, absolutely do not hesitate to contact me. I am looking forward to your message!
Education
I have completed a BA (2021) and an MA (2022) in philosophy from the Institute of Philosophy at the University of Leuven, Belgium, from where I am currently set to graduate (09/2023) with a Research MA, also in philosophy.
Experience / Qualifications
I scored 104/120 in my TOEFL exam, which I took in 2016. Since then, my English has only become better. To further enhance my pedagogical skills, I have organized seminar-style groups with students of Philosophy, Literature, Theology, IT, and Medicine at KU Leuven LMU Munich. Herein, I set up discussions around critical texts which exposed participants to creative hermeneutical approaches. Dedicated to student welfare and community building, I also serve as Head Coach at IMSAL FightClub, where students from Leuven’s different educational institutes come together to train Mixed Martial Arts, in the process cultivating friendships which outlive their time here. Furthermore, I formulated the curriculum for, and teach, an Arabic language program I started in collaboration with local Islamic organizations. This program effectively introduces aspiring researchers to the fundamentals of classical Arabic. As someone who has learned Arabic, German, and Persian, I have extensive experience with teaching methodologies and believe in combining elements of fun with sufficient rigor to hit your language goals.

I can teach you mathematics, both at the basic and advanced levels. I can also help prepare you for the GRE test. Mathematics is all about practice and having good teachers, so if you have both, it should not be a problem for you. I have always excelled in math, and I genuinely enjoy it. I would like to use my skills to help others.

I can solve various types of problems and assist you in gaining a better understanding of them. Math primarily involves practice, but with the guidance of good teachers, like the ones I had, you can save a lot of time in the process.
