Bharatanatyam is a journey that demands discipline, and I understand what it takes to reconnect with movement as an adult in a way that is also joyful, meaningful, and rewarding. In my class, I will take you through the fundamentals (dance theory, technique (adavus, hasthas, bedas etc), and history), while supporting you with a sustained and safe practice. I will also teach choreography to supplement your technique practice and inspire you to feel natural with the Bharatanatyam style and performance. I want to understand your learning goals and tailor my teaching to best support you.

I offer private classes online and in-person classes in Oxford. I adapt my teaching methodology for children, adults, intermediate learners and those returning to training/practice after a long break. I speak Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi as well.

Hi! My name is Shreya and I'm a trained dancer with over 15 years of experience. I am primarily trained in Bharatanatyam, but have undertaken training in various other dance styles, including contemporary and folk dance. I have worked with children and adult learners and adapt my teaching style based on your goals.

Bharatanatyam demands commitment and discipline but the pedagogy can often be daunting, but I love to make Bharatanatyam as accessible, relatable, and joyful for learners today.

Fun fact: I am also a lawyer

Opleiding

I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Bharatanatyam), SASTRA University. I have trained in Kalakshetra and Vazhuvoor bani of Bharatanatyam. I have taken masterclasses with Guru Venu G (Natanakairali), Rukmini Vijayakumar, Dr Padma Subrahmanyam, Rama Vaidyanathan, Mavin Khoo to name a few.

Leservaring

I have had the experience of:
1. Intensive training in interdisciplinary areas like acting, musical theatre and contemporary dance
2. Succeeding in competitive environments (national level competitions and reality tv)
3. Teaching individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds (lawyers, primary school children in suburban America, senior citizens and more), and
4. Performing internationally (from temples in South India, to international dance festivals and conferences)
