Hi, I'm Abbie!

I'm a recent graduate from Durham University, with a degree in Modern Languages and Cultures. I spent a year of my undergraduate living in Frankfurt and Bavaria, where I taught English in a secondary school and language summer camps.

Currently, I work for an EdTech company in London. When I'm not working, I enjoy fitness and seeing friends.

Education

2018 - 2022: First Class Honours in Modern Languages and Cultures (BA) from Durham University. This included a Year Abroad placement.

A* A-Levels in English Literature, German and History.

Learning a foreign language is not a linear process that consists of memorising a list of words, and speaking a foreign language is not an oral translation exercise.

There are two types of approaches to acquiring knowledge:

motivating my students and help them establish a learning rhythm;
encouraging their creativity;
helping them become more familiar with the language;
teaching them the letters and their sounds;
strengthening their memory by training their phonological loop;
teaching sentence building plans instead of memorising sentences;
explaining how language works so that my students can become independent as quickly as possible.

I have been teaching languages to all ages for the past 30 years. I took early retirement in July 2022 and have since been tutoring privately, with a very high success rate..
I have taught in the same secondary school for the past 21 years and my classes have performed well in French and German at GCSE and A level.
I have also done a lot of teaching English as a foreign language, to guests in our house.

I have gotten A*s in French, German and Maths A Level and am going to study Modern and Medieval Languages (German and ab initio Russian) at the University of Cambridge. I have done some maths tutoring in the past for a Year 4/5 student and a Year 7/8 student. I am enthusiastic about languages and maths and would love to help anyone up to GCSE level who needs some extra support in these subjects.
