Textual analysis and essay writing, finding your love of literature
Van 34.44 $ /h
Textual analysis is a vital skill as a student and a great, life-enriching skill outside of education. But if you don't know how to approach a text properly it can seem daunting and impossible. I really struggled with poetry until I had a teacher who showed me how to break it down, now I love reading poetry and write it myself.
As an actor and English graduate, I have a lot of experience breaking down texts, from books, plays, films (both scripts and finished products), television, and art. I can help you with characters, themes, imagery, language, and context. What I'd really love is to help give you a launching pad to independent exploration so you can find what you love.
Beyond learning how to explore a text, I can help you with essay-writing. Whether you're starting from scratch or need help perfecting a work in progress, we can look at formulating ideas, structuring an argument, expressing your ideas concisely and effectively, and grammar.

Hi there,
I'm Ben, I'm a working actor, I trained at Drama Centre on the MA Screen acting course, before that I did my BA in English Literature at Exeter University with a heavy focus on film study. There's nothing I love more than digging in to a text, whether that's as an actor, analysing a script to find all the details to create a compelling performance, or as an academic exploring the themes, imagery, language and context of a text.
Not only is textual analysis vital as an actor or a student, I think it's an invaluable life skill which will deepen your enjoyment of books, poetry, film, TV, music, art and even video games.
I've been lucky to have some amazing teachers who have had profound impacts on me and I'd love to be able to help students and young actors find their voices. Everyone has different things they're struggling with, so I'll work around what you need, I believe learning at it's best, feels like a collaboration.

Getting in to Drama School is a hard and competitive process, an outside eye and some coaching can go a long way.
I've been through the audition process a few time before getting in to Drama Centre on the MA Screen Acting course so I'm very familiar with how the process works and what they're looking for.
We'll work on picking good monologues, textual analysis, character creation and performance to give you the best chance at getting in to your dream school.
This is all applicable to acting grades like LAMDA or Trinity or performance for school.
