In this course, you will be made aware of some common pronunciation mistakes by non-native English speakers, in particular some that are prevalent among Asian speakers, and how to develop strategies to deal with these mistakes. We will also deal with English stress and intonation patterns to help you develop a typical English 'melody' in your speech.
Clear pronunciation is very important for successful spoken communication. Even when a speaker’s grammar is flawless, communication may still fail due to poor pronunciation. However, it is possible to identify and set achievable targets for pronunciation, and there are many excellent self-study resources for improving pronunciation skills.

I have been a teacher and researcher for most of my life. Therefore I have had a lot of time thinking about why I enjoy teaching so much. The two most important reasons are interaction, which is the sharing of ideas and new topics with students, and secondly, to see how my students get more and more independent and critical in their learning by asking meaningful questions in their studying of any subject.

I also support my students with direct preparation and practice for school/university assignments. Teaching is online/remote via Skype or Zoom according to what suits you best.

My specialities include English Academic- and Essay Writing, English Grammar, English Vocabulary and Reading Skills including studying and understanding English literature, English Pronunciation and Speaking Skills, Accent Reduction, and Critical Thinking. Having a PhD in Biology, I have a deep interest in general Biology, especially genetics, population genetics and evolutionary theory.

Common Curricula/Syllabus that I teach include:
IB English Language and Literature SL/HL levels, IB Theory of Knowledge, IB Extended Essay, IB Biology SL/HL levels, A-level English and Biology, AP (Advanced Placement) English and Biology, SAT II Biology, TOEFL and IELTS Test Preparation, in addition to General Biology at tertiary (university) levels.

I often get the following questions from my students:

1. What is the easiest way to learn English in Manila?

Never read a translation of an English book again - learn how to use a dictionary efficiently instead; speak only English when going about your daily businesses and tasks - only use your native language as a last resort; watch a lot of English-speaking movies and TV series, but only with English subtitles. Especially comedy shows are useful in this respect since comedy includes a lot of play with language - if you find yourself laughing, you are studying and learning English! After a while, you will see that you don't even need the English subtitles anymore.

2. Is English easy to learn?

Yes, if you immerse yourself in the language daily. However, to write well in English is a tall order; many native English speakers also struggle with this. Call it an art, if you wish. That being said, we can all get better at expressing ourselves in writing with targeted practice and the right support.
