About Me
Hello :)

My name is Gwen, I was born and raised in Weimar, Germany and came to London to study law (now graduated). I started to tutor younger students when I was at school because I had near-perfect command of spelling and grammar of German, unlike other native speakers of the language, because being bilingual in Korean and German, I had actually studied German grammar when I was very young. I also started teaching maths soon after, focusing on homework help and exam preparation.

I taught a variety of students throughout the years, allowing me to gain 5+ years of experience as a German and maths tutor, including volunteering as a tutor for Syrian refugees. I learnt that it is extremely rewarding to accompany a student on their learning path, whether they are at school or an adult learner with a passion for the German language, or whether they want to improve their maths for school.

Being a native speaker in Korean as well, I also offer Korean lessons for anyone who is a fan of the Korean culture and would like to become more proficient in Korean. Just let me know what your goals are and we can work on them together!

I would love to get to help you reach your goals, so I hope to hear from you soon :)

Lesson Overview

Who: Johannes – Brand owner and Central Saint Martins graduate with experience in celebrity dressing and industry experience in luxury couture houses

Techniques & methodology: Practice-led, studio-based teaching combining draping on the body, pattern making, sewing, and portfolio development, tailored to individual goals

Lesson length: Typically 90 minutes, allowing time for hands-on making, discussion, and feedback

Who the lessons are for: Students aged 16+, including foundation, BA, and MA applicants, as well as early-career designers seeking portfolio refinement or industry insight

Languages: English and German

Focus: University applications, professional portfolios, technical development, and understanding industry expectations

I am the founder of the fashion brand Johannes and an actively practising designer, bringing an industry-focused approach to teaching. I support students in developing strong, competitive portfolios for university applications and professional roles, with clear guidance on concept development, editing, and presentation aligned with current academic and industry expectations.

My professional work includes designing and dressing international artists such as Björk, Lady Gaga, Grimes, Kylie Jenner, Megan Thee Stallion, Rina Sawayama, and Post Malone for performances, editorials, and public appearances. This experience gives students direct insight into professional standards, timelines, and the realities of working under pressure within the fashion industry. My technical foundation is shaped by experience in couture and luxury fashion environments including Viktor&Rolf, Givenchy, Balmain, and bespoke tailoring ateliers.

My teaching covers draping, pattern making, sewing, and hand-based construction techniques, with a strong focus on fit, proportion, and translating ideas into technically resolved garments. I offer targeted guidance on what universities are looking for at foundation, BA, and MA level: from creative curiosity and process at foundation stage, to technical skill, concept development, and visual clarity at BA level, through to research depth, authorship, and critical positioning at MA level. I work closely with students to ensure their portfolios clearly communicate both creative identity and readiness for academic or professional progression. I am fluent in German and, with formal training in painting, can also support students in developing visual research, composition, and fine art–led portfolio work where relevant.
