I am a former University Senior Lecturer with over 20 years experience in teaching and research. I am passionate about inspiring individuals to aim high. I have assisted multiple students and early career academics to achieve their goals. I worked in research and teaching roles within UK universities between 2004 and 2024 and am an Advance HE Fellow. I am the author of four books, have published in a range of international peer reviewed journals and have chapters in various other books. I also have significant experience in peer-reviewing for academic journals.

After a twenty-year career in UK higher education I decided to embark on my own freelance private tutoring and academic consultancy business. I have delivered bespoke 1:1 tutorials to university students since April 2023. I was a part-time private tutor from April 2023 to June 2024 and have been full-time since then working with various tutoring agencies. I teach social sciences, qualitative research methods, study skills and academic writing and I have assisted students from undergraduate to PhD level. I have also assisted early career researchers or those new to teaching at the higher education level.

I believe that students learn best when they construct knowledge for themselves rather than passively take it in, so all my classes are student-centred and aim to help you become an independent learner by improving your skills so that you can perform better in your assessments. I offer online lessons. A typical online lesson is 1-2 hours. I can also read, review and provide detailed feedback on your work if required.

Über mich

During my time working as an academic for over 20 years I have gained valuable skills and experience that enabled me to start my own freelance private tutoring, research and higher education consultancy business 'Gibbons Academic' in 2023.

During my PhD studies, at the age of 27, I made the decision to become a Christian. No one was more surprised than me at this decision but it completely changed my life for the better. My faith now underpins all that I do and I believe it motivates me to want to help others, including the students I teach.

I am happily married to an amazing wife and we have four beautiful children.

I used to be a distance running coach and have competed in multiple distance running events, including three marathons. I enjoy playing football (soccer) and basketball and used to play both competitively.

I have taught social sciences, sport & exercise and health-related science students in sociology and history of sport-related modules as well as research methods (especially qualitative), study skills, academic writing, proposal and dissertation modules. I have supervised PhD students to completion and have acted as a university mentor providing academic research support to early career and postdoctoral students. I have experience of designing, marking, and providing feedback on a range of assessments, including exams, essays, reports, proposals, presentations, and dissertations, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

There are plenty of tips and tricks out there, and I am here to help you not only learn about them but to put them to good practice. Be it referencing or expanding your vocabulary or improving the structures of your papers: it can all be learned!
This class is preferably for a single student, however groups may apply as well. I intend to create a productive learning environment, whereby you as the student will be practicing a lot so that your progress is permanent and you can easily apply your new knowledge in class. I offer an approach to writing that goes beyond the basic technical details. This is because when it comes to writing, I believe the personal is the most important. By talking to you about your experience of writing, I will help you realize your project to its fullest creative potential. Questions about your project will include: How do you plan it? What goes through your head when you sit down to start? What role does re-reading and editing play in your writing process? Opening up this space for exploration will allow you to then insert the appropriate technical details. In addition, if English is a foreign language, my ESL-teaching background should let us find the right language solutions when necessary.

Explore Public Speaking through...

Intonation and Melody

When training for a presentation, decide which words and passages deserve extra attention and increase the tone to emphasize these points. If something sounds exaggerated or false, your audience can turn against you.

Volume

A speech is not ordinary conversation, and a presenter can’t convey passion and enthusiasm if the words are delivered softly.

Clarity

Don’t forget to articulate every word, to ensure clarity on your part and understanding on the part of the audience.

Emphasis

Even in the same sentence, emphasizing different words can change the focus of a message. Changing emphasis can alter meaning and/or implication.

Pauses

when pauses are placed in strategic spots in a speech, they can make the difference between a good and an excellent presentation. There are several purposes for which pauses can be used: to give listeners a chance to absorb something that’s just been said; to generate expectations about something that’s going to be said...

Pacing & Tone

If you often get negative feedback about the faster or slower delivery of your speeches, practice delivering a speech sometimes faster and sometimes slower, so you can arrive at a natural pace.

Do you want to learn German from a native?

I can teach you German depending on your needs. Wether you want to practice your grammar or speech and conversational skills (or all) is up to you. At first we would determine your level and wishes, from then on I will teach you with my study material and we will practice together. I have build my study material while living abroad in Spain. There I had students from all ages that I thought German to. I always try to incorporate creativity and fun into my lessons. Homework is also a recommended part of the lessons.

The classes can be held in person in Rotterdam or online!

I have been a qualified, professional English teacher and translator for more than 20 years.
