Of je nu net begint met studeren, al langere tijd bezig bent, of op latere leeftijd weer de studieboeken bent ingedoken, op enig moment kun je het gevoel krijgen dat je tegen de grenzen van je eigen kunnen aanloopt. Voordat je dan vanuit oplopende frustraties een onomkeerbaar besluit neemt, stuur mij een berichtje. Grote kans dat ik tijd en ruimte heb om even met je te sparren over jouw situatie en je kan helpen om met nieuwe inzichten een doorstart te maken.

Met meer dan 10 jaar ervaring als tutor, mentor, studiecoach, scriptiebegeleider en docent, heb ik heel veel leerlingen en studenten gezien en kunnen begeleiden bij zeer uiteenlopende uitdagingen. Je kunt bij mij voor vrijwel alle schrijfopdrachten terecht, voor academische vaardigheden zoals kritisch lezen en effectief studeren, en ik help veel afstudeerders die werken aan een scriptie of een thesis of een andere afstudeeropdracht.

Daarnaast is het goed om te weten dat ik veel mensen help die worstelen met faalangst, perfectionisme, ad(h)d, autisme, tentamenstress, uitstelgedrag, en bijvoorbeeld dyslexie.

Ik ben ervan overtuigd dat niet 'IQ', of 'inzicht' of 'aanleg' of iets dergelijks doorslaggevend zijn voor de mogelijkheid om iets te kunnen begrijpen, af te ronden, of onder de knie te krijgen. Ik geloof dat studiestrategie de centrale factor is. En dat is nu typisch iets dat je kunt ontwikkelen aan de hand van een aantal basale inzichten over de werking van het menselijke brein.

Bij het doornemen van teksten maak ik graag gebruik van de 'track changes' mogelijkheid in Word zodat ik in de kantlijn suggesties voor verbeteringen kan plaatsen. Verder gebruik ik een online platform 'whereby' waarvoor je niets hoeft te installeren of te downloaden. Voor eventuele 'off-line' afspraken overleg ik graag even wat wel en niet handig is wat betreft locatie.

Zodra ik mensen vertel dat ik een 'docent' ben of 'in het onderwijs werk' is de eerste vraag 'welk vakgebied?' Mijn antwoord is dan meestal dat ik leerlingen en studenten help bij zeer uiteenlopende problemen. Dit kunnen zowel inhoudelijke problemen zijn, als uitdagingen die meer op andere vlakken zitten.

Ik zie mezelf soms als bijlesdocent, soms als scriptiecoach, soms als psycholoog, mentor, politieagent (niet zo vaak gelukkig), boksbal, en studieadviseur. Allemaal verschillende rollen. Toch vragen ze allemaal om vergelijkbare vaardigheden en competenties. Geduld, rust, doortastendheid, assertiviteit, reflectie, specifieke kennis, en specifieke ervaring, openheid, authenticiteit, en meer.

Naast het hele studiegebeuren, durf ik mezelf ook wel te omschrijven als singer-songwriter. Ik heb sinds een paar jaar ook een kajuitzeilboot. Die vraagt af en toe ook om wat aandacht. Beweging: ik wandel veel. Naar werk, voor de boodschappen en door de natuur. Daarnaast voeg ik mij wekelijks bij een klein clubje fanatiekelingen die een specifieke tak van Kung Fu beoefenen.

Om weer terug te komen bij het onderwijs is het nog wel leuk te vermelden dat ik mijzelf de laatste jaren met grote interesse verdiep in kennis over de werking van het menselijke brein. Ik streef er ook zoveel mogelijk naar om die kennis in mijn werk en in mijn eigen leven te integreren. Of ik nu iemand help bij het omgaan met tentamenstress, of dat ikzelf een specifiek stuk op de gitaar in de vingers wil krijgen. Super boeiend.

Ik ben al tijdens mijn eigen studieperiode begonnen met het begeleiden van huiswerkklassen van middelbare scholieren in Amsterdam Noord. Na mijn opleiding aan de UvA ben ik daar als docent/onderzoeker aan de slag gegaan. Inmiddels ben ik alweer een behoorlijke periode als zzp'er aan het werk.
