The subject focuses on the concept of 'Bardo' embedded within a Buddhist cosmological framework. Basic terms and concepts of Buddhist cosmology will be introduced and discussed, so beginners should not face any difficulty to follow. The "Bardo" as an intermediate state of reality has made thorough impact in the West through the Tibetan funerary text of Bardo Thodol ( the Great Liberation through Hearing in the Intermediate state) and Evans-Wentz's translated text, the so-called "The Tibetan Book of the Dead". A number of commentaries have been piled upon the original content and particularly Jung's commentary approaches the subject at a psycho-cosmological level. As part of our classes, we will also discuss Jung's commentary to the text to understand the reception of the original bardo concept in the western intellectual history. Throughout the fascinating journey of pluralistic realities and the cosmic drama of birth-death-rebirth, the class will take up a contemplative and critical thinking form of engagement, where there will be ample opportunities to question the basic matrix of reality, ordinary experiences and also key concepts from intellectual history.
