Although I am a trained philosophy teacher for secondary students, I have shifted my focus to tutoring English and Portuguese language learners. My goal is to provide dynamic classes that allow students to use functional language in real-world ways, but each class can be tailor-made to the individual's needs. I use Cambridge materials for my English classes, in addition to real-world texts and videos, to train students on grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. Student-centered classes are the most beneficial in my opinion, so I focus on having the student speak while also guiding them with the correct language depending on their problem areas.

Hi! My name is Joana and I am originally from Luxembourg. Growing up in Luxembourg allowed me to be fluent in our three national languages: Luxembourgish, French and German (Native Proficiency).
After graduating from high school with a specialisation in modern languages and humanities, I moved to the United Kingdom to study Journalism. Living in London for over three years allowed me to perfect my written and spoken English. Since I've been 16, I have been giving private tutoring lessons both to primary and secondary school students.

During my time in tutoring,I learnt that children tend to learn faster and easier when enjoying a lesson. I therefore try to keep my lessons fun and exciting but of course, effective. My lessons included tasks like word puzzles, role play, quizzes etc. I provide worksheets, but I am open to helping out with homework they received from school or anything they are having problems with. I am currently doing my masters in Rotterdam at RSM and would like to offer French and/or English classes to students. I believe communicating with students in the language they would like to learn is key if they want to become confident in the language. Hence, I suggest doing skype classes or real life meetings at home or outdoors depending on your preferences and talking together will be very helpful for the student to improve in a particular language. I will also help with homework, grammar and the theoretical side of the language if desired.
I have been a counsellor in summer camps in Canada where I had to teach small children aged from 5-15 English. Some of them didn't even know a single word of English when they arrived. It was very hard but we managed to get to know each other, communicate well and believe me, their English improved a lot.

Languages are not only an awesome skill to have, but they also act as a doorway into life and success. Speaking several languages enables you to connect with people worldwide. From my own experience as a trilingual, languages have helped me discover cultures and give me the feeling of truly belonging to a community even when I am far from home. Languages give you the courage to plant your roots in new soil no matter where you go.
