I specialize in teaching about Music and how to play the Guitar.
In class, I always make an effort to understand what are the goals and interests of all students, as well as their skills. This way we can address the issues at hand more effectively and make sure the student never loses his/her interest and focus in music and his/her instrument. I believe that an honest and friendly relationship between teacher and student is essential for this exchange of ideas to happen more clearly and fluently, so I do my best to make everyone feel comfortable enough to share their thoughts freely.
I offer good and personalized classes. This means that there will be special care with your interest in music and guitar, all basic skills will be worked upon and strengthened, all specific requests and ideas will be addressed, both improvisation and interpretation can be developed, and exploring potential, achieving goals and having fun are main priorities.

My name is Gonçalo, I’m a young Portuguese musician living in Den Haag.
I explore several types of music such as alternative punk/rock, post-rock, contemporary jazz, improvised music, folk/singer-songwriter, etc.
What I love about the process of making and performing music are the endless possibilities that exist well within the grasp of anyone who really attempts to understand them. Not only this but, while understanding them, still wanting to create an interesting and unique voice and being able to reach the level of focus and entertainment (both at an intellectual and emotional level) that has the potential to “elevate” our minds and personalities. Basically, Music is true fun and entertainment.
The guitar is, for me, one of the most interesting vehicles for musical expression, given that it has immense sonic possibilities and continuously gives us, in so many ways, some of the most memorable, powerful and fun musical moments.
Teaching is for me one of the most intellectually engaging ways to pass on the knowledge I’ve gathered, while still learning from the students themselves. As I’ve mentioned, one of the things I find most important and interesting about music is the creation of a unique voice. The creation of this unique sound allows us to manifest our own interests and ideas about music and life in general in our playing and enjoyment of music. It is through this very attitude that I get to learn from the students and their personalities, and I believe that it is also something that makes students engage more with their own ideas and perceptions, which in turn makes them progress more.
Education
Completed the Jazz Guitar Master's Degree at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp and studied with teachers such as: Frederik Leroux-Roels, Hendrik Braeckman, Toen Verbruggen, Mathias Coppens, Bo Van der Werf.
Completed the Jazz Guitar Bachelor's Degree at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague and studied with teachers such as: Eef Albers, Wim Bronnenberg, John Ruocco, Patrick Schenkius, Henk Huizinga, Johan van Kreij.
Completed the Jazz and Modern Music Bachelor's Degree at the Lusíada University of Lisbon and studied with teachers like; Ricardo Pinheiro, André Fernandes, Demian Cabaud, Mário Delgado, Vasco Mendonça, Gonçalo Marques, Desidério Lázaro.
Attended masterclasses from renowned artists such as: Lage Lund, Jeff Ballard, Enrico Pieranunzi, Joey Baron, Erik Ineke, Rory Stuart,Perico Sambeat, Guillermo Klein, Ohad Talmor, Dan Weiss, Miles Okazaki, David Doruzka, Matt Renzi, José Mário Branco, Carlos Bica, Frank Mobus, Jim Black, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Dave Holland.
Had some awards such as:
- The award for “Best Combo of Portuguese Music Universities and Higher Education Schools” in Jazz Fest of São Luiz, Lisbon;
- The Merit Award from Lusíada University of Lisbon consisting on fully-paid tuition for the 2nd and 3rd years of the Bachelor’s Degree in Jazz and Modern Music.

I give private guitar lessons to several students of different ages and levels.
I work(ed) as a freelancer and with several groups such as:
- Audio-visual project "Flowers/Ghosts & Echoes" with whom I released an album called "Drift Flux Change";
- Post-rock band "Then They Flew", with whom I recorded and released an album called "Stable as the Earth Stops Spinning";
- Hardcore/Metal band "Provisional", with whom I release two EP's;
- Alternative rock band "Proper Looney",
- Free jazz group "The Unmoored Dreaming, with whom I released a self-titled album;
- and several others...
I’ve played in several venues like the Hot Club and São Luiz Theater in Lisbon, Korzo Theater in The Hague, WORM in Rotterdam, La Conserve in Leuven, and others.

Always helping the student to understand -depending on his/her the theoretical level- what we are doing, putting together music and theory. And giving tools to expand the border, at all levels. I have knowledge and experience in Jazz, Classical, Klezmer, Choro Music and Improvisation.

• Music Theory
I focus on having a good basics, spending as much as we need to understand every single thing, because then with times it becomes more easy. I try to help the student simplifying the material because then, we only with ourselves with a good procedure of the basics to solve any problem. Only with one lesson, you will understand what I mean.

I have experience in preparing students for exams, the ones for the semester as well as any official exam; doesn't matter if you have an intermediate theory level and you want to improve, or if you would like to be stronger solidifying the knowledge you have (which is always the best option), or if you don’t know anything about notes and music concepts and you would like to be familiar with them. Maybe you are an adult who always wanted to improvise but doesn’t know where to start...?
The only thing you need is a good organization -which I can provide- to reach any goal!

Let's dispel the myth.
They may, in fact, have lacked the names, but "knowing" in music means something else than a dusty stockpile of information and labels. Their ears, their voice, and their hands "knew" very well...

Music theory is the way we get some order into the endless realm of possibility that music allows us. Naming and conceptualizing these possibilities is very useful in many ways. It provides us with an overarching and abstract understanding of what we have done (reflective element), and it can even open up to yet unheard sound combinations (generative element). But one point remains crucial: music theories come from music practice and come back to music practice. Theories are the most useful and loyal servants for music-making, but only empty speculations without it.

In these lessons, I will help you to understand how to navigate music theories and what to do with them. I will show you a plurality of approaches to systematizing sound relations that will serve at best the music you love to play or want to compose.

The lessons will be custom made for each student.
Whether you are a beginner who simply wants a little help to get the basics right or you are a cultivated musician fond of music theory who wants to explore advanced and complex concepts out of the box, I will provide you with ideas, materials, and exercises. I will work to adapt to your learning rhythm while keeping you challenged at the same time. You will receive regular feedback, advice, and guidance

FIRST LESSON:

Then, we elaborate a personal plan, depending on your level, expectations, practice time, and taste.

TECHNIQUE:
Learning the proper technique of the instrument is very important to avoid injuries and to be able to express ourselves and perform our musical ideas in a successful way. That is why we learn nice songs in different styles, depending on your taste (from classical to jazz, film music, pop, etc.) and we combine it with cello method books with progressive exercises to improve the cello knowledge.
In the case of young beginners, we also play cello games during the lesson to make the learning experience dynamic and fun! Children can lose attention and get bored very quickly!

Playing together is an essential part of enjoying music. Therefore, the last part of the lesson always consists of playing cello duets and having fun!

ABOUT ME:

I studied my Bachelor in Conservatori Superior del Liceu in Barcelona, with professor Amparo Lacruz. Then, I decided to continue my studies at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague in the class of Michel Strauss and Jan-Ype Nota.
During my studies in The Hague, I did a teaching internship at the Royal Conservatory as a part of their Minor in Music Education. I also taught in several Music Schools during my studies in Spain.
Currently, I teach private students in The Hague and I created a cultural center in The Hague called Pandora Studio.
I play regularly in two chamber music ensembles: Trio Jakob and Azalaïs Quartet.
