Violin learning is the process of discovering one's own voice through the infinite possibilities that this four strings instrument has to offer. From sparkling, intense and rough to pure, kind and crystalline; learning the violin, as many other arts, is about freeing the emotion through the discipline and order of sound and movement.

Let me introduce myself.

I am Ángeles, an Andalusian in Finland, finishing my master degree in Music Performance at the prestigious Sibelius Academy with great professor Mari Tampere-Bezrodny. I came to Helsinki two years ago seeking for a personal and cultural growth, with huge passion for music and the need to share it. I discovered in violin teaching a new path to that energy to come true, to materialize, by inspiring and leading enthusiastic students to their best performance.

The starting level and goals of the student will determine the direction of the lessons. Join my class if violin is your passion, if you need to reinforce your technique or you want to discover the wonderful world of violin playing.

About Me

I have taught violin in Spain as reinforcement for students that want to become better, by helping them to plan their practice sessions, to ease the learning process with the same techniques that I use as violinist, and giving advices about how to approach the pieces in a very creative way, which could open up the imagination and freedom.

As a teacher I appreciate the enthusiastic attitude towards music and violin, but I understand that enthusiasm is not always with us, it is a quality that one developes when the subject is interesting and challenging but also when teacher's approach to the subject is motivating and inspiring.

I am a very sensitive person, with high empathetic qualities, that enjoys literature, in special philosophy; painting, writing, nature and I am full of passion for music and life.

Leon graduated from the University of Cambridge, where he read Academic Music. He studied violin and viola with Lutsia Ibragimova, David Dolan and Alexander Tumanov at the Yehudi Menuhin School, a specialist music school in the UK, and was concertmaster of the Cambridge University Orchestra. Recent projects include Tippett's 'A Child of Our Time' with Martyn Brabbins and Poulenc's 'Sinfonietta' with Jac van Steen. He now lives and works as a freelance violinist and music teacher in Helsinki.

Leon is passionate about teaching violin/viola/music theory and is committed to a lifelong study of music and music pedagogy so he can share his knowledge with others. In his final years at school, he taught violin to beginners at a local primary school and, after graduating, more experienced 8-13-year-olds at a summer music camp. He has had two years' private teaching experience from a base in Cambridge. In addition, Leon has gained invaluable teaching experience from extensive informal tuition of advanced learners (conservatoire degree-level).

The format of your lesson with Leon is not set in stone! He believes that a flexible teaching style is essential to cater effectively for different abilities: reaching one's own milestones always takes priority.

If you are a beginner looking to play some of your favourite songs, for instance, the most effective strategy may be to learn the 'tricks' of the trade, or essentials only. However, if you are looking to develop a solid basis for more virtuosic playing, Leon's 'Russian-style' violin school background is ideally suited for rigorous instrumental training.

For non-beginners, Leon is also able to offer advanced teaching: this includes help with musical interpretation, the pinpointing of technical issues and anything in-between. If in doubt, please enquire.
