Play Your Favourite Songs on Guitar - feel the joy

Do you want to play that song you love on guitar?

You have some basic command of guitar already but you need some guidance. Perhaps you're uncertain which 'key' fits you best? Perhaps you're not sure if the song can even be played suitably on guitar? Where to start? Maybe you've tried already from a book or a YouTube video but it's just not happening? But, you just love a good melody ;-)

I'm a British singer/song-writer/guitarist who has played concert halls to festivals in the UK and toured Europe with my own songs. I was raised on the classics. Beatles, Kinks, Ray Charles, Hendrix, Prince etc

I've 'lived music' and 'lived from' music for many years. I performed thousands of intimate gigs and the vast majority of those have been solo performances. I've performed in-front of audiences of 50,000 and audiences of just 1.

I won't get too technical and I won't start scoring music. In fact my music theory is basic, and I wouldn't claim to teach it. But what I'll show you is the soul of the song. Where the rhythm lives, how the groove feels and how to interpret that in terms of guitar. I'll listen to where you're at and be able to direct you better. Playing the guitar is closely linked to 'performance' and that's especially true if you want to entertain others. Thats my strength. To make the guitar shine, to become one with the instrument suits an extension of your body. To 'play' music and feel the joy in doing that, so that it makes you feel good and anybody listening too! That's the goal. Thats the challenge. I believe I can help you with that.

“Music isn’t just a pleasure, a transient satisfaction. It’s a need, a deep hunger; and when the music is right, it’s joy. A foretaste of heaven.” —Orson Scott Card
Informations supplémentaires
I prefer to work with steel string acoustic guitars for these types of classes (although not exclusively). Importantly (& as the title suggests), I will expect you to have a 'minimum' of 3 favourite songs that you wish to learn before I agree to teach you.

Présentation
I'm British guy with mixed southern Italian blood, raised in Birmingham, England - the birth place of 'rock'. I have made a living from music for almost all of my life only occasionally having to do other work. I was adopted and in many ways. music was always a safe haven for me as a child. I felt music and songs on a very deep emotional level and I'm glad to say I still do. Music has been my only really consistent and reliable friend over the years. I genuinely feel blessed to have been gifted with this talent.

My biggest skill (I feel) is that of a musical arranger, writer and composer although I am constantly told that what I do 'live' as a performer is very special, in its ability to connect with the audience. I have a number of my own compositions/productions published on feature film, Netflix TV series and also documentaries.

I have a passion for songs and were I to name just 2 artists, I'd say I'm a big fan of David Bowie and the Beatles. When I truly relax, its often to the sound of Johann Sebastian Bach!

Performing music in-front of an audience invariably means you are an 'entertainer', whether you care to admit it...or not. I'm proud to say that word no longer scares me ;-)
Education
BTEC Higher National, with an apprenticeship in Engineering and a BTEC higher certificate in electrical engineering. Thats the formal stuff. Musically speaking, I heard my parents music coming from downstairs as a child growing up whilst drifting off to sleep every night. Classical, Bossa-Nova, Old-skool Jazz (Luis Armstrong, Glenn Miller, Sarah Vaughan, Duke Ellington, Dinah Washington.. you get the idea). I was soon to rebel and became a huge 'The Clash' fan!
Expérience / Qualifications
I've toured with Manu Chao (as support band) and opened for such bands as Gogol Bordello, Nigel Kennedy & Many more. I have performed more than 1000 concerts in the last 15 years and at least 60% of those have been solo performances. I've performed in Europe, North America, South America and SE Asia and my biggest gig was in front of a mixed live and TV audience of 100,000+
I have managed audio production company and record label since 2007 originally based in London.

Do you have a song that you've written that you believe could be amazing? Do you already have some skills using a DAW like Logic, Ableton, Pro Tools or Garage band? Would you like a new set of 'arrangers/producers ears' to redefine your song, reimagine it or simply improve what you have to bring it up to the best possible level?

I have worked in these areas where the boundary between composition, production and arrangement becomes blurred. The truth is they are inseparable to the end result and imagination is everything. So is an extra set of ears! Thats were I can help.

Which instrument to use ? (bass guitar or bass synth), which keys sound and where to place it in the mix. Where to set that high pass filter on the vocal? How much saturation does the snare need?

Musical arrangement and instrumentation
Production techniques, in the context of mixing
How best to use harmony in string quartets, or choirs or horn sections
How to place the guitar? Does it even need one?

I can give creative input and advise having written and composed more than 150 songs and recorded approximately 100+. Having run a UK based record label for almost 20 years.

If using a studio DAW, my experience is mainly with LogicPro although most creative 'arrangement' decisions do not need to be technical knob twiddling.

My background as a musician is vocals and guitars but as an arranger I've worked with everything.

English:

As a classical guitarist, I can play many genres, only in jazz, I don't have any experience. For anything else, you can come to me. I am not a professional, therefore if you are already quite experienced in the guitar I think another teacher might be better suited. I can also teach you how to read music and touch upon basic music theory if you want.

I am Jess, a musician and producer from Ghent, graduated as a bachelor in music at PXL Hasselt. In the meantime I have been teaching guitar for 10 years at music studios and in the form of private lessons at home. Besides teaching I have my own project called Monagi and I write/produce for bands like Tout Va Bien and Patches. I also play guitar at TheShadow Machine. All my lessons take place in a relaxed atmosphere in my music studio in Ghent at your own pace.

For beginners: During our guitar lesson you can bring your own songs that you want to work on or together we will see what the best songs are for you and what you can learn the most from. This ranges from the basic chords that make up most pop / rock songs to playing along with the melody or accompanying yourself while singing. So you can play what you always dreamed of in no time!

For advanced users: Together we look at what you want to work on in terms of rhythm, soloing or improvisation. Which styles you are familiar with or which you would like to learn to play. These lessons are ideal for you if you want to broaden your knowledge of the guitar or if it feels like you've reached a plateau you can't get past.
