Classical Greek - An introduction for great beginners

Classical Greek is a fascinating, challenging language.

In it, some of the best world literature and technical texts were written, and these texts continue to engage and inspire specialists and curious alike.

In this course, I will show the basics of this fascinating language the only way I know, and the only way I think it actually works, that is, through a careful balance of good old grammar and basic vocabulary.

About Me

I have a Philosophy degree from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), where I also completed my Master's in Philosophy and a Ph.D. in Philosophy, this with a research period at the Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Universität - Frankfurt am Main. I recently completed a post-doctorate at the Goethe University on Aristotle. I am a full professor of Philosophy at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO). My research areas are History of Philosophy (Ancient and Medieval Philosophy) and Metaphysics, mainly Aristotle and Plato.

I love all languages, and I teach them regularly at the university - Ancient Greek and Latin - anyone interested? ;)

Let's study!
Latin is one of the most fascinating, engaging, and also challenging languages of all. Basis of so many western languages, with deeply embedded impact on the English language itself, that are many reasons to dive into Cicero's prose or Vergil's verse. Used up into the 19th in much technical literature, the knowledge of Latin can unlock a truly vast world of knowledge and, of course, beauty from the many works of Latin literature. Apart from that, knowing Latin truly helps to learn the neo-latin languages (Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian); I should know it, as I am a native speaker of Portuguese. In this course, I will show the basics of this fascinating language the only way I know, and the only way I think it actually works, that is, through a careful balance of good old grammar and basic vocabulary.
I aim to present in the clearest way possible the basic concepts of Aristotle's metaphysics. In doing so, this course can be considered not a completely unreasonable introduction to metaphysics, at least from a historical point of view, since if Aristotle is not the very first metaphysician, he certainly occupies has a very special place among the early metaphysicians and his discussions of metaphysics continue to set the agenda, in a way or another, to the discipline. After some contextualization, I will deal with Aristotle's theory of causes, his views on final causation (teleology), some of his topics concerning the nature of time, space, infinity, logic, his theory of substance and essence, his famous Categories, and his complex work, the Metaphysics.

Latin, Ancient Greek, and Biology tutoring classes
I have several years of experience tutoring students of different age groups in Latin and Ancient Greek. I am deeply passionate about these languages and I enjoy helping students improving at them. I believe that understanding the structure of a sentence is fundamental when approaching these languages, therefore this is an important focus for me. During the class I always dedicate some time to reasoning and translating sentences together with the student. I have a BS in pharmaceutical biotechnology and I am currently a master student in Medicine. I find biology very fascinating and I have been tutoring it for years now. Depending on the topic and the student's needs, I structure the lessons differently. I usually explain the topic and use tools such as spaced repetition, notes, conceptual maps to make sure that the student has understood.

Learn Latin and ancient Greek as living languages, with an agrégé in classical literature, graduated from the ENS de Lyon
A LIVING METHOD Whether you are a beginner or more advanced, I will help you progress in Latin or ancient Greek, which you will learn as a living language: it will not be primarily a question of translating Latin or Greek, but above all of speaking it, reading it, writing it! FORGET YOUR DICTIONARY By doing so, you will memorize vocabulary and grammatical structures much more easily than with the classic method based essentially on translation. You will no longer spend your life in the dictionary, and eventually, you will read your favorite authors like an open book! LATIN I essentially offer a living Latin course based on the Orberg method, acclaimed by thousands of Latinists around the world. Whether you are a beginner or more advanced, I can accompany you on the chapters corresponding to your level of Familia Romana (first volume) or Roma Aeterna (second volume). It is therefore important that you get this book. If you want to work on Familia Romana, I also highly recommend that you purchase the Vivarium Novum workbook to consolidate your learning: volume I for chapters I to XIX, volume II for chapters XX to XXXIV. GREEK For Greek, we will use the Logos method. It will be up to the student to obtain a copy of this manual. A LA CARTE COURSES However, I am attentive to pupils and students who are waiting for more conventional methods, particularly in the context of preparing for the baccalaureate, the competitive examinations for the grandes écoles, or even the agrégation. Version, theme, explanation of an old text: all these exercises are well known to me for having practiced them for many years. It is also possible to build a course based on your desires (excluding erotic texts and magic manuals). Do you want to follow one method rather than another? Discover a particular author? Tell me! Be careful, however, to remain realistic! We do not tackle Xenophon or Titus Livius without a solid level. Do not hesitate to contact me for any request. NB: I do not offer translation services, and even less for tattoos. Thank you for your understanding.

Old language courses for high school students.
My name is Serdane and I offer ancient language courses to secondary school students who may have difficulty developing a working method that suits them. Extroverted and bubbly...and above all, a lot of humor! Everyone learns in their own way. This is why I do not adopt a rigid method, but rather I adapt to the specificities of each student. I assess their level, their strengths, any weaknesses or delays, and I adjust my course accordingly. My priority is to restore the student's confidence: Latin and Greek are accessible to everyone when they are well explained! I believe in the effectiveness of active teaching methods: I encourage maximum student participation, guiding them to discover what works best for them. This allows him to continue his learning independently. Finally, I provide specific help for the preparation of questions or exams in more complex subjects. My price includes full tutoring (private lessons, possibility of asking questions outside of class hours, assistance with writing and correcting questions, etc.).

PhD holder with 15 years of teaching experience, offers private lessons in Latin and Ancient Greek.
Hello, My name is Giorgia. I offer private lessons in Latin and Greek to those who want to improve their translation skills in classical languages. I have been dedicated to translating classical languages for over 25 years and offering private lessons for over 20 years. I have extensive experience in classical languages and literature. In fact, I attended the "liceo classico" in Italy, a country whose centuries-old philological tradition requires students on this course to acquire a solid competence in translation from Latin and Greek, as well as a broad knowledge of classical literature, by devoting nine hours a week to the study of classical languages, for the entire duration of the five-year course. I began teaching classical languages during my university years, while also studying other humanistic disciplines, such as philosophy and literature. In fact, I hold an Italian doctorate in philosophy and am currently completing an American PhD in comparative literature. I have never stopped offering private lessons in Latin and Greek. My translation method, tested over twenty years of experience which have confirmed its effectiveness, aims to enable students to acquire mastery of a rigorous translation technique based on the recognition of the quasi-scientific "accuracy" of classical languages and which, once acquired, limits the possibility of making translation errors to almost zero. This technique is based on respect for the syntactic structure of Greek and Latin sentences and on a careful examination of the arrangement of the linguistic elements which constitute them. By teaching mastery of the different stages of analysis of the Latin and/or Greek sentence, the translation technique that I propose allows the student to: - speed up translation time - limit concerns related to the apparent incomprehensibility of classical texts - strengthen knowledge of Latin and/or Greek grammar - acquire the correct method of searching for words in the dictionary - benefit from increasing familiarity in constructing the general meaning of the text to be translated - broaden one's knowledge of the classical cultures which are the basis of our humanist culture. This technique is aimed at all students who wish to master translation, also to succeed in the Latin and Greek exams for the Agrégation and CAPES competitions in Modern and Classical Literature, and at those who wish to cultivate this study in order to better understand our humanist culture which has its roots in classical literature. Thank you for your attention! Giorgia
