Wolof is the most spoken language in Senegal and Gambia. I've designed the course for people who would like to learn to speak wolof either for family reasons or traveling.

In this course you will learn to speak Wolof in basic everyday settings, grammar and depending on your goals we can dig deeper in the language.

I have background in linguistics and have experience in teaching languages. I have my Master's degree in African studies and have studied Wolof language for one year intensively as a part of my Bachelor's degree.

I have also family background in Gambia, and currently living in Gambia. I am not a native speaker but learned Wolof as my second language since child. I can offer help in understanding the language and reach a certain level. I will be teaching the Wolof spoken in Gambia.

About Me

I am a kind and patient teacher who wants to make language learning fun and relaxed.
I design my classes according to the student's needs and learning ways.

My native language is Finnish and I learned Wolof as my second language, because of my background. I have concluded one year intensive Wolof studies as a part of my Bachelor's degree. Currently I am living in Gambia and speaking Wolof daily. Obviously, I cannot offer you a native level understanding of the language, but I can teach you the structure and grammar of the language.

My goal as a teacher is to help students to become courageous in using the language they are learning and to have the tools to keep learning the language. My main goal is to help you to reach a goal where you can have conversations in Wolof. Repetition and conversation will play a big part in my classes.

As my academic background lies in linguistics and African studies, I want to engage the culture in the language learning. Understanding the culture will help us to understand the language as well, I believe they go hand in hand.

As I live in Gambia and have a Gambian background, I will be teaching Gambian Wolof.

Learning a foreign language is not a linear process that consists of memorising a list of words, and speaking a foreign language is not an oral translation exercise.

There are two types of approaches to acquiring knowledge:

When asked what year follows 1999, you can immediately answer 2000 without having to think for a long time and, above all, without having memorised each number individually, starting with 1, 2, 3 ... You know that numbers are formed according to a certain pattern. With only ten digits, you can form an infinite number of numbers and always know which number comes next.

When it comes to the alphabet, words and sentences, it's more or less the same, but school pedagogy, school textbooks and regular lessons still follow the rote learning approach. In the lessons I propose, you will learn to use patterns because this is more efficient and faster.

Learning is easy, but unlearning bad habits is extremely difficult. This makes it all the more important to learn the right reflexes as early as possible.
