In this course you will learn how to write academically as well as professionally. In this class, we will explore the art and craft of writing through two major areas: essay writing, where you will learn to organize your thoughts, craft clear arguments, and write with purpose and precision, and creative writing, where you will unlock your imagination while practicing storytelling, character development, and vivid description. Together, these two disciplines complement each other and will equip you to create compelling, well-crafted work in any project.

1. Academic Writing This course equips students with the skills necessary to produce effective, coherent, and persuasive academic texts. It emphasises critical reading, argumentation, and the proper integration of sources using citation standards (e.g., APA or MLA). Students learn how to craft research questions, structure essays and reports, and revise their writing for clarity and precision. The course also addresses issues of plagiarism, language accuracy, and academic style, preparing learners to publish or present their work in scholarly settings. 2. Methods Course The methods course introduces students to research design and methodology in the social sciences (or other relevant disciplines). It covers both quantitative and qualitative approaches, highlighting sampling strategies, data collection techniques, and methods of analysis. Students gain practical experience with tools such as surveys, interviews, and statistical software, while also discussing epistemological foundations and ethical considerations. By the end, students are able to design and implement independent research projects, analyze findings, and critically evaluate existing studies. 3. Communication Skills This course focuses on developing effective verbal, non-verbal, and written communication in academic and professional contexts. It emphasizes public speaking, interpersonal communication, and digital communication practices, with attention to intercultural competence and adaptability in diverse settings. Students practice active listening, persuasive speaking, and conflict resolution strategies. The course also integrates real-world applications such as interview preparation, professional presentations, and teamwork, ensuring that learners are able to convey ideas clearly and confidently in both formal and informal environments.

I hold a degree and am a professor of social sciences. I have over 10 years of experience teaching at all levels, as well as tutoring and writing dissertations and theses. The personal essay is often a stressful and difficult part of a college application. Unlike other stats like grades and test scores, a college essay must show personality, making it difficult to know where to start for many students. In this workshop style class I will be working with students to develop a complex personal narrative in their essays.

Writing essays or a creative writing piece does not come easily to everyone, but learning how to analyze, interpret, and discuss literature in essays, as well as in life, is essential. It is important for younger generations to learn media literacy in today's age and learn how to write about different ideas and opinions without the use of artificial intelligence (AI). The trouble begins with picking a thesis, followed by structuring an essay. As a top essayist in my alma mater's English department, I believe I can help students compose a well-argued and well-structured essay for their literature classes without the use of AI and to help teach media literacy, with the help of close reading. I can also help with creative writing assignments from a structural standpoint by offering tips and constructive feedback.

Despite advances in AI and other technologies, the core practice of excelling in college remains reading comprehension and essay writing. While these tools can act as a band-aid, they do not help students with foundational learning skills overall. With five years of experience in teaching college composition, I am aware of the gaps between high school and college literacy with which many students enter. My course will focus on filling such gaps to improve prospective and current students' overall reading and writing skills to aid in textbook comprehension and essay writing for any class they may attend.
