"Why Poetry": Reading, Understanding, Enjoying a Poem!

Is poetry confusing when you try to read it? Do you want to write poetry but don't know where to start? Do you love poetry and want to talk about and share your favorite poems? If you answered yes to any of these questions - this class is for you! In "Why Poetry", we will look at different forms of poetry and the work of at least one new poet each week. We will practice reading and unraveling the meaning of poems together, and we will discuss the significance of specific poems and poets. You will also have a chance to introduce some of your favorite poems to the class. We will even practice writing some of our own poems. Below, you will find a list of some of the poets whose work we will explore together!

I'm Teacher Mariana, and I am from the United States. I am currently living in Indonesia. I have a Bachelor's degree and a Masters degree in English literature. I also have a 120 TEFL certification. Ven a sumergirte en el poema: en su ritmo, en sus pliegues, en esas razones que lo vuelven fascinante. Por qué puede doler con belleza y, a la vez, abrir una sonrisa. La poesía no solo cuenta la vida: la reordena. Construye mundos dentro del mundo.

La poesía no es un misterio inaccesible: es un lenguaje. Y como todo lenguaje, puede aprenderse. En este curso empezamos por lo esencial: qué es poesía, qué es un poema y qué hace que una voz se vuelva poética. Vamos a reconocer los recursos que transforman un texto común en un texto cargado de intensidad: imagen, música, ritmo, silencio, rima y la importancia de la métrica.

Hay técnicas, herramientas y decisiones concretas que hacen que un poema respire. Te voy a compartir recursos que uso al escribir y métodos para trabajar el borrador: cómo encontrar la imagen central, cómo ajustar el tono, cómo eliminar lo que sobra y cómo darle brillo a una idea sin perder su verdad.

También vamos a trabajar el poder de las palabras: cómo pueden conmover, transformar y construir sentido. Para eso, nos apoyaremos en ejemplos seleccionados de grandes autores de la poesía universal y en textos propios, reunidos a lo largo de años de lectura, estudio y escritura.
