Are you happy?

Hey, my name's Dan, and I want to offer you a course all about exploring what happiness is and how you can achieve it. To do this, we'll be integrating modern scientific research and evidence with millennia of ancient philosophies, belief systems, and cultural insights. By doing this, you get all the wisdom you need and it's all backed by science!

This course will give you a new worldview on life to make you happier, wiser, and more self-aware. To do this, we don't just look at happiness- we look at human nature itself, evolution, the human brain, the body, morality, religion, emotions, meaning, self-actualisation, self-transcendence, and much more. All of these topics are explored from scientific and philosophical perspectives, drawing on what the experts and evidence in all these fields are saying.

And none of this is abstract: this whole course is all about giving practical advice to help you become the best version of yourself. But unlike other courses on happiness, all that advice is backed by real, trustworthy scientific research: so we know that it all works.

This course is for absolutely everyone. Whether you stopped science before GCSEs or chose it as your career, this course has a colossal amount of information that I've integrated from lots of different fields, and can present to you in an easy and friendly way.

Everyone of us - unfortunately - gets into conflict situations now an then. Especially in those situations it would be extremely beneficial to all affected parties to understand each other, whereby this is the most unlikely occurrence then. Those conflicts pretty often tend to stir up and cause nothing than harm and suffer to all affected parties.

This course intends to convey an alternative, more empathetic perspective, which is fundamentally based on scientifical evidence derived from Social, Cognitive and Behavioral Psychology.
Equipped with this new knowledge the participant gets enabled to take a more sophisticated and sustainable position in conflicts. A perspective that should not only enhance the ability to reflect his/her own conflict-related behavior, but even more to understand the regarding behavior of other persons. Ultimately understanding the emotional behavior of him/herself and others can prepare to prospectively contribute in a constructive instead of destructive manner in case of conflicts.

It is true that the philosopher is the friend of wisdom, but above all, he is someone who does not want to make mistakes in reasoning. For the past 10 years, I have been teaching German using the philosophy methodology, having studied philosophy at the Master's level at Aix-Marseille University. It turns out that the analytical mind is very useful even outside the confines of philosophy. Today, there are even fields of activity such as management with philosophy or philotherapy. In recent years, some German students have asked me to also teach them philosophy courses, and that is why I decided to offer philosophy courses directly.

Learn to think with the great philosophers of the past!

In these tutorials you will learn
- about the ideas of some of the most famous and influential philosophers of the modern age,
- how to read and understand original philosophical texts,
- most importantly, how to become a critical thinker and philosophise on your own.

In ten tutorials (each two hours long), we will follow the development of modern philosophy from the 17th century to the present. We will start with Descartes, look at Spinoza, Locke, Hume, Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, and end with Wittgenstein and Heidegger. We will cover topics in the philosophy of mind and language, in epistemology, metaphysics and ethics. We will discuss questions such as "Is the mind distinct from matter?", "Can I know anything?", "Can we distinguish between good and evil?", "Does God exist?" etc.

Note:
You can choose whether you prefer ten tutorials (each two hours long) or twenty tutorials (each one hour long).

About me:
I am a retired university professor who still enjoys teaching philosophy. I have taught many students (graduate and undergraduate) for several decades at reputable British universities. I obtained my philosophy doctorate at the University of Oxford. I have published many books and articles in philosophy. Among my favourite philosophers are Aristotle, Aquinas, Descartes, Kant, Wittgenstein and Heidegger.

Conversation + is a new conversation based format that combines grammar, syntax, understanding vocabulary and expressions as well as the practice of correct pronunciation and intonation with the reading of a text of your choosing. On the basis of a selected text the conversation evolves around the topics at hand; parallel to this, we discuss anything language-related that comes up. Any question, any problem can be addressed. In this way, linguistic issues can be explored in greater depth, based on your specific field(s) of interest. This fosters a stronger engagement, promotes enthusiasm, and openness that oftentimes fall short in a classic language course situation.
