This course is designed for beginners, intermediate learners, and students with some prior knowledge of Mandarin. As a native Mandarin speaker, I will guide you through improving your listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills while integrating practical examples from daily life and Chinese culture. The course covers pronunciation, everyday conversations, useful vocabulary, grammar structures, and strategies to confidently use Mandarin in real-life situations. In addition, I will introduce aspects of Chinese culture and society, helping you understand the mindset behind the language.

Please prepare a notebook or computer for taking notes. The course will be taught with English as the supporting language, so no prior knowledge of Mandarin is required. I know some basic Dutch words and simple sentences, which I may use occasionally for clarification, but I am not able to teach the course fully in Dutch.

I specialise in teaching Chinese and Japanese to students of all ages and abilities. For both of these languages, my pronunciation, grammar and fluency are at a near native level, and my students benefit from my ability to explain concepts in English.

I am a creative teacher, however I do not shy away from traditional approaches to teaching, and as a teacher of languages, I particularly enjoy teaching grammar and pronunciation and have developed a thorough approach to each of these, along with all other aspects of language-learning. I have considerable experience devising and implementing my own syllabi (something I also greatly enjoy!) to cater for the diverse needs of my students - particularly younger learners.

The exact format for my classes therefore differs from student to student: some prefer to focus solely on speaking and listening; others (schoolchildren for instance) study more writing and translation. A typical syllabus followed could include the following on a weekly or fortnightly basis:

pronunciation training; writing practice; focussed work on grammar and grammatical structures; reading exercises; conversational role-play; vocabulary testing; essays on history and culture
