Open and friendly discussion about student's very specific struggles. For example, if RUAE I will go through each question type with student. If they highlight say linking question. I would break it down to the basic concept. Then use a formula for these questions that is always successful. I would then model the formula and after this apply to past paper link questions. I then would ask the pupil to complete easier examples, building their confidence until they felt comfortable to attempt past paper questions. Normally at this stage the student successfully understands how to complete these questions in all variations. This strategy is how I teach all different types of RUAE questions.
