Hello! I’m Juan, a passionate cellist originally from Seville, Spain, and now based in Utrecht. Music has been a life-changing journey for me, and I’d love to share its transformative power with you!

I’ve been playing cello since I was 12 and teaching since I was 17. Through years of performing, studying (including my master’s at HKU Conservatory), and working with a wide variety of teachers, I’ve developed an approach to cello playing that is practical, mindful, and deeply personal.

Über mich

Hello! I am Juan, I am cellist from the Sevilla, Spain. Very curious and sensitive for what music has brought to my life. I lived in Utrecht for 5 years already and now I am recently graduated from my master studies in HKU Conservatory.

I meet the world of music when I was 6, singing in a choir in festivals and retirement houses, and at 12 I started my cello training. I met quite a wide range of cello teachers. I learnt from some of them what helps me to play and from other, I learnt what it did not help me at all. All useful with different purposes. At the age of 17 years old started to teach following the recommendation of a teacher. I had some students for a period longer than 4 years.

Throughout my educational years I did not feel particularly what I was doing, but I loved music. During my masters i figured it out that I have a pretty flexible joints all over my body, so my cello playing also was kind of particular. Sometimes I had to work really hard for things that other fellow colleagues had for granted. I had to work hard to get an idea about what I was doing. There is nothing wrong about stopping and checking how things are. That’s what I do, checking and sorting a more economic plan to go to YOUR next step.

In my lessons I focus on using the power of our brain to make our body ready to make music. I like very much the idea of creating a beautiful and deep cello sound. Do you want to try my recipe? Let’s start together your sound search.

Erfahrung / Qualifikationen

I started teaching at the age of 17 years old, preparing children for conservatory entrance exam. Since then, I have being teaching privately and at music academies (Aula de Musica de Aracena, Orquesta Manuel de Falla, L’Armonía in Spain).

I am a professional musician, currently principal cellist at Folkwang Chamber Orchestra in Essen, with a long experience of teaching, both children and adults of all levels.

My goal is to keep learning the instrument fun, while at the same time improving your playing technique and deepening the understanding of music.

The past twenty years have been revolutionary for music production. Nowadays you can record, produce and release your own music with your laptop and some simple peripherals. This is done with a music program called a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) in which you can edit sound. But as everyone has noticed who starts such a program: it's not easy! Hundreds of buttons and menus and a specific workflow ensure that you do not just get the sound you want. I use and teach two of the most widely used DAWs: Ableton Live and Studio One, which take us through all the steps from recording sound, using samples to editing and mixing. Due to my studies at the Rock Academy and the Musicology department of the UU and my more than ten years of experience as a professional guitarist, bassist and music producer, I have extensive knowledge of all aspects of the professional field.

I offer a holistic, well-rounded music education for all ages and abilities. The training I provide is tailored towards the students personal learning objectives and goals, some of these include solo performance, improvisation, playing in an ensemble and composition.

My approach combines conventional and alternative teaching methods, such as reading music, playing by ear, solfeggio, the suzuki method and mindfulness. The three aspects I prioritize in my lessons are imagination, experimentation and creativity.

My method focuses on understanding and expanding the students' musical capacities by means of an integrative approach that includes physical training, technique and comprehension.

My flute lessons are available in a flexible time frame from 30 minutes to 1 hour, with a frequency of weekly or biweekly, depending on your preference. As a graduated flutist with a bachelor and master degree from the conservatory, where teaching was an important part of my education, I have experience with both group lessons and individual lessons. My method is focused on enthusiasm for music and flute playing, where I welcome every student, regardless of background, language or level. Everyone is welcome to start their musical journey with me!
