I completed a Degree in English Language and Literature in 2004. As part of my degree I had to study subjects such as Linguistics and units that studied writers such as Dickens and Shakespeare. Within the optional units that I chose to follow I studied a range of writers from Djuna Barnes to William Wordsworth and for the English Language part of my degree and I chose to complete units in subjects such as Teaching English as a Foreign Language and the Language of the Media. I enjoyed completing my degree and I feel that it allowed me to develop good oral and written communication skills and gave me a thorough and varied understanding of English Language and Literature.
After I completed my degree I worked for a few years and I decided to begin a Teacher Training course due to a long-standing interest that I had in building a career as a Teacher. I chose to complete my Teacher Training on a part-time basis through Weymouth College so that I was able to work whilst I was studying. Through my Teacher Training I learnt skills such as how to use ICT to advance the teaching and learning of students and of the importance of having a high level of organisation when teaching. Whilst completing my training I worked for HMP the Verne as a Supply Teacher on an as and when basis. Due to the environment that I was working in at HMP the Verne, I had to have a personal conviction when teaching the students and I had to recognise how to develop potential in others. When I was working at HMP the Verne I was employed by HMP the Verne and Strode College and I completed training activities through both organisations. For instance, as I was working in a prison I completed training on how to work safely in that environment and I completed courses that helped me stay up to date with relevant educational issues.
Since completing my teacher training I have worked for Language Schools in temporary roles, and I have worked for Teaching Agencies. When working for Language Schools I have had to complete additional language training in relation to teaching English as a Foreign Language. When working for Teaching Agencies I have also completed additional training such as safeguarding courses, which have taught me the importance of promoting and safeguarding the welfare of the students I am teaching, and I also completed a Team Teach course.
I feel that my experiences of working for the Language Schools English First and English 2000 allowed me to make good use of the knowledge that I gained through studying English Language and Linguistics whilst at University. For instance, as ESOL classes involve teaching the students a lot of grammar, when teaching this subject I was able to make good use of the varied knowledge of English grammar that I gained through studying Linguistics. As I often shared classes with other teachers whilst working for Language Schools, I had to work well as part of a team.
I currently work for Budmouth as a Cover Supervisor. I feel that my job at Budmouth has allowed to gain a good knowledge of the school. I have also completed CPD courses through Budmouth, which have helped me to improve as a Teacher. I have covered English classes in my current role and this has allowed me to gain knowledge of the topics that are covered in the English Department. For instance, I understand that the students study texts such as “Lord of the Flies” and writers such as Shakespeare. As I cover classes at Budmouth, I have to use my initiative when teaching and have respect for the staff that I am working with.
I am also currently working for a company that provides support staff for University students that have additional learning needs. I work as a Study Skills Support Tutor for a company called First Class Support and within my role I help students improve their study skills in any area that they feel they need help and particularly in improving their writing skills. I feel that working for First Class Support has helped me to improve as a teacher as I am supporting University students that are working at a higher level than the students in the classes that I normally cover.
