Hello there, my name is Mary and I am a recent graduate of Leiden University with an MA in International Relations. Regarding my background, I am a native English speaker due to my upbringing in the United States and I received an excellent 6/7 grade in my English A HL course with an IB diploma in high school.

I am eager to teach English to any learner and I have previous experience teaching English as a volunteer. With my lessons, I will utilize a variety of tools to comprehensively improve the student’s grammar, spelling, and vocabulary. Furthermore, I am able to work with all age groups, including young children and adults. Spanish is not just an amazing and beautiful language, it is the main language of 20 countries in the world, in fact it is the second most widely spoken language. I am Colombian, and Spanish is my native language. If you are interested in learning Spanish or if you need some extra lessons for improving your Spanish level, I can help you!!!

English has become the Lingua Franca of our times. It's a valuable skill to possess, beneficial for everyone. It comes handy in the ever-developing world that we live in and opens doors to many places, also in the mind. Additionally, bilingualism enhances the cognitive skills.

In 2023, I've obtained a Master degree in Linguistics at the University of Amsterdam. I've achieved the C1+ levels in English, on the CEFR scale. I have 2 years of experience living in London, where I acquired RP (received pronunciation) and 7 years of experience in the International Academia (Amsterdam). My linguistic background gives me the capacity to explain the sounds and various processes of the language, from a perspective many natives do not know. In teaching, I practice the holistic approach. It is my belief that language is for people of every age and education, but I'm aware that everyone deserves a personal approach. In the first session, we always do a needs analysis and become acquainted, to make sure we click as people and will enjoy working away at your personal language goals.

Over the years, my classes, have proven to raise the confidence levels of students. We practice knowledge in English, on 4 levels of proficiency: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing.

I will focus on your strengths and guide you to how to use those to your advantage in learning. We will elicit your potential. With a little help, I am sure you will achieve the goals you set for yourself.

I have experience teaching all language levels and ages. I am an enthusiastic and patient teacher. I also speak a bit of French and Portuguese. I have a university degree for my English teacher training and a degree to teach Spanish. If you need help with school or want to start conversation classes let me know. That is why my method is a compilation of the traditional usage of books, texts, audios, and short films, combined with PowerPoint presentations full of images, interactive games, and recreation of real-life situations in which the students will naturally learn complex grammar topics while having fun. I also create a particular relationship with each student to detect the type of learner the student is and tailor the class according to his/her personality, needs, and expectations. The class can be taught in English or Dutch but I am always aiming to expose the student to Spanish as much as possible so he/she can experience faster progress.
