Learning Music Theory with the Help of Popular Songs

The aim of this course is to understand how music theory works with the help of popular music.
By analyzing and deconstructing songs from a chosen repertoire, the student will gather an understanding of how functional western harmony works and will be able to apply this method on their own, which in turn will speed up the process of learning how to play songs. Optionally, the student might choose to focus on improvisation, composition, chord-scale theory or a particular genre.

Hello!
I am an electric and upright bass player from Malta and I have spent the last 8 years playing music in different styles and situations. Collecting experiences directly from the bandstand has taught me a lot about the demands of the modern bass player, which is why I decided to create this course.
My teaching practice draws a lot from my personal experience as a student. I have had lots of lessons with tutors with proven track records and methods, but the fun part of studying music for me was always to find my own way of learning something, which is to teach it to myself. This led to a direct awareness of the processes that go into learning and it helped me to come up with step-by-step methods that go through each phase of the learning process in a systematic way.
It is my belief that the learning requirements for the aspiring A-list session musician are very different from those of the bassist who simply wants to meet up and jam with friends, and so it follows that the student should try have an idea of what he or she would like to get out of these lessons. I encourage the student to talk about these learning goals at the very start of the course in order to set a direction for the lessons. If, however, the student lacks a clear idea of what they want to learn, this is no problem at all, and we can adjust and tailor the lessons to one's needs as we go along.

One-on-one lessons for bass guitar: a methodical approach to learn how to play the most popular styles such as jazz, pop, rock and funk.
The course is structured in a way that lets the students choose what they want to learn, freeing them up to explore their potential while also preparing them for today's musical demands. The students will be coached on any of the following topics:

Deconstructing famous grooves and analyzing why they work, rhythmic exploration including polyrhythms, groupings, odd timings...
>>> Soloing <<<
Talking about ideas concepts, patterns, chord-scale theory, transcribing and applying ideas from selected solos...
>>> Walking Bass <<<
Swing feel, harmonic considerations, transcriptions, micro-time feel, backing tracks, individual case study...
>>> Music Theory & Ear Training <<<
Learning how to read in bass (and optionally treble) clef, scales and chords, functional/modal harmony, worksheets and practical examples, dictations...

Sound, fingering-positioning, posture, fretboard knowledge, strength/speed/independence exercises...
