Through my experience as a secondary school teacher, I have come to realise that the acquirement of a language goes
beyond just having another skill.
Languages give students an opportunity to understand another culture and build respect and awareness as an individual. Equally, being an individual who enjoys immersing themselves in other cultures, I believe it is extremely beneficial to make use of out of classroom learning experiences, especially in language learning.
I look at creating engaging and interactive lessons in which students are consistently exposed to the spoken language to promote their confidence and create a safe environment in which they can explore the language without fear. On the other hand, as an individual who grew up bilingual, I feel that the inclusion of students whom English is not their first language is extremely important.
