Guitar lessons, ukulele lessons and music theory lessons

Through his studies, Alex had the opportunity to learn guitar with teachers from different backgrounds and influences (classical, latin, jazz, flamenco, Turkish, Indian, jazz composition and pop).
This led him to study his instrument and investigate music through multiple angles and perspectives, accumulating complementary knowledge to fully understand and synthesize its functioning.
After achieving a degree in pedagogy, he started to devise exercises and systems of learning through his own method, refining it as time went on. He then started to teach what he had learned and developed, first in private classes then through music schools.
Alex's priorities through the lessons are development, motivation and interest. It's very important that there is a constructive evolution in the pupil's playing, a constant will to move forward, as well as pieces/songs that inspire him or her.

It's important that the pupils learn through an efficient and personal method, but also through their own interest and repertoire (wishlist).

In a teaching lesson the focus is put on :

- guitar posture, technique and sound
- timing and rhythmic feel
- strumming and grooves
- interpretation
- theory and knowledge of music
- improvisation
- repertoire (on student's wishlist)

There are three dimensions to a student's programme : scores, tutorials and coaching.

Having a Master's degree in Jazz composition, Alex designs the scores himself, making arrangements of pieces / songs in an accessible way, along with his method and exercises for guitar technique. The scores are written with a hybrid notation (music notation and tab notation), and with all the information necessary about the right and left hand.
After having agreed on the pieces / songs to be worked on, the relevant score is shared and given at the lesson. The teacher goes through it, while he also plays it live to the pupil for even more reach. He then explains what needs to be clarified in order to prepare any homework.
Finally, Alex creates a video tutorial about the piece or song that needs to be learned for the next lesson. This gives extra support when practising at home, in order to avoid any doubt and keep motivation up.
A report is then created to keep track of what has been done as well as what needs to be worked on, in order to unlock technical requirements and complete a specific repertoire in a constructive and efficient way.

Alex teaches at home or at the pupil's own location ; lessons are in Dutch, English or French, for all ages and levels. The teacher mainly gives live lessons, where he works with his pupils on specific material (technique and repertoire). If for any reason a live lesson can't take place, it is of course possible to follow an online lesson. Lessons last 30 minutes or 45 minutes, weekly or biweekly.

About Me

From an early age onwards Alex has been very interested in music - his grandparents introduced him to classical and jazz and his parents to pop and rock. He therefore decided that music would take a bigger part in his life by starting to learn guitar. When he became a teenager, his interest kept on growing, and he discovered more styles such as hard rock, flamenco and gypsy music. After that intense phase he decided to become a professional guitarist, understanding that music is the language of emotions, beyond any spoken language or convention. It is an inner urge for him to express himself, communicate with others and transmit emotions through music..
Alex Vansalen is a guitarist, arranger and composer, born and raised in Brussels, Belgium. He started with classical guitar when he was 7, then he continued with jazz guitar in 2008 at the Jazz Studio, in Antwerp.
In 2010 he did a Bachelor's degree at Codarts (Rotterdam Conservatory) in World music, with latin music and jazz as his main focus of study. In 2018 he achieved his Master's degree in Jazz Composition at Codarts with Paul van Brugge, his research being about the use of live electronics in the field of jazz composition.
During and after the period of his studies, Alex continued composing and performing his own pieces and arrangements with several bands and line-ups. In 2019, he released his first album, Opalessence, with the band Childwood.
Alex Vansalen also has ten years' experience in teaching guitar and music theory, and has been working in several music schools (Rotterdam International School, Rotterdam School of Music, Guitar Academy), giving lessons in the genres of steelstring/folk , pop/rock/blues, and jazz/South American music.

Alex is a brilliant teacher. My son is enjoying the lessons very much.

Oriol
Clarinet Lessons, Improvisation, Music Theory, Music Understanding
Would you like to learn one of the instruments which have more style possibilities? Would you like to know why many composers say that is a very powerful instrument because it fits in may situations? Did you know that in the Klezmer history clarinet substituted the violin for projection reasons but also because perfectly able to imitate the human voice, crying or laughing? Would you like to discover the fascinating world of clarinet? One of my priorities as a musician is the sound. I believe that with a beautiful and personal sound you are able at every level to transmit emotion and meaning, it doesn’t matter the difficulty or the level. So I try to focus first on awareness of what’s beautiful for the student and what’s not. Then through technique and repertoire (suggestions of the student or suggestions of mine that can help to grow the student curiosity), we develop the student knowledge. Always helping the student to understand -depending on his/her the theoretical level- what we are doing, putting together music and theory. And giving tools to expand the border, at all levels. I have knowledge and experience in Jazz, Classical, Klezmer, Choro Music and Improvisation. You just need a precious element! • Music Theory I focus on having a good basics, spending as much as we need to understand every single thing, because then with times it becomes more easy. I try to help the student simplifying the material because then, we only with ourselves with a good procedure of the basics to solve any problem. Only with one lesson, you will understand what I mean. I have experience in preparing students for exams, the ones for the semester as well as any official exam; doesn't matter if you have an intermediate theory level and you want to improve, or if you would like to be stronger solidifying the knowledge you have (which is always the best option), or if you don’t know anything about notes and music concepts and you would like to be familiar with them. Maybe you are an adult who always wanted to improvise but doesn’t know where to start…? The only thing you need is a good organization -which I can provide- to reach any goal!
