Viola and Violin Lessons: Technique, Improv, and a Healthy Relationship with your Instrument

This course is for viola and violin students from the beginner through the intermediate level. My goal is for my students to foster a healthy and long-term relationship with their instrument. The course focuses on practicing and truly understanding technique, with an emphasis on listening. Weekly assignments tend to include technical exercises, scales, and classical pieces of the student's choice. Basic improvisation is also an interest of mine and, I find, a valuable experience for my string students.

I believe repertoire is largely a matter of student taste. Students of mine have learned pieces in the Suzuki books and other classical repertoire volumes, but have also learned pop and fiddle songs according to their interest.

I hold a Bachelor's degree in Violin Performance from the University of Puget Sound, where I graduated in 2015 before moving to Vienna to study privately for three years. I am currently in the Master of Viola Performance degree at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, where I study with Ásdís Valdimarsdottir. I have been teaching violin throughout my studies since 2009.

While my musical education is classical, my performance interests are much wider. I have performed jazz and pop improv, and am currently exploring how hip hop can be implemented on the viola and violin.

    About Me

Hello! My name is Zachary and I have a passion for music and languages.

I hold a degree in violin performance, with a minor in German from a small private university in the United States. After graduating in 2015, I decided to pursue my musical and lingual endeavors in Austria. In summer 2018 I moved to the Netherlands to pursue a Master's degree in viola performance at the Royal Conservatoire in the Hague, where I am underway learning Dutch as well.

While living in Austria I developed my understanding of and fluency in German, speaking every day, reading books, and practicing with my Austrian girlfriend and her family. To finance my studies I have been teaching English in various settings and to various age groups. I have taught students aged 10-20 in a classroom setting throughout Austria, and have babysat and taught children aged 4-11.

My interest in the German language, as well as my teaching method, centers around grammatical understanding and training combined with vocabulary en masse. I believe anyone has the ability to reach English or German proficiency within two years, if not sooner. It is only a matter of putting in the time to learn the necessary vocabulary and having the right tutor or teacher to clarify grammatical concepts. I look forward to helping you on your path!

    Experience / Qualifications

    University major in music performance
    University minor in German
Three years living abroad in Vienna, Austria
    Native English Speaker
    Two years teaching English
I am a native English speaker with experience teaching English to all ages and in various settings. This course is for students of all English speaking abilities to develop their grammatical understanding, breadth of vocabulary, and confidence within the language. Beginner students will study grammatical concepts such as conjugation and use of prepositions, as well as basic conversational abilities. For intermediate and advanced students, the course covers topics of the student's interest and focuses on conversational fluency. My main tool for improving an intermediate student's English is to consistently correct them as they go, and to go into greater detail on grammatical issues that prove to be of issue. I try to push students to speak as well as they possibly can, with as little stress as possible. English is the world's current lingua franca - most people do not speak it perfectly, but with some consistent work you can get close!
This class is for students with up to one semester of university German experience. The course covers vocabulary and grammar, with the possibility for conversational practice, depending on student ability. I hold a minor in German and have been living and developing my German abilities in Vienna, Austria for three years. As someone who learned the structure of this grammatically complex language as an adult - beginning in university - I am in a unique position both to describe and explain grammatical concepts such as word order, cases, and noun genders, among other concepts that can be stumbling blocks for beginning German students.

Mario is studying at the Royal Conservatoire in Den Haag, following the “Master in education”. He is familiar with Trinity and ABRSM syllabus. Graduated cum laude in violin, Mario attended masterclasses and workshops with celebrated musicians. Violin and solfège lessons for all ages and levels. Fun and serious at the same time
Hi! I'm Laura , violinist (1989). With teaching experience since 2005, I'm currently working at two music schools (in Delft en Brielle), but I'd like to see my private practice grow. I've graduated in the "Master in Performance" in 2011 ( Codarts, Rotterdam) and in two Bachelor degrees (Barcelona, Liceu - 2007; Rotterdam, Codarts - 2009). I love teaching and I think that, next to performing myself, transmitting that and helping others do the same is a very important part of our lives. I am open to different styles of music, so if the technique allows it, everyone can have a saying in the pieces they play.

    Emese
Violin and music lessons on every level for every age
As a graduate violin teacher I offer music lessons. I have experience in teaching different levels and age groups, from beginner children and grown-ups to advanced youngsters, age 6-40. It's a nice thing to help people get closer to an instrument and music, and be part of others' achievements! For children it's very useful to learn music because of its transfer-effects, and for adults it's also a good way of recreation, quit from the workdays and so on. Please write me with confidence, if You have interest! References are available!
