    About Me

I tutor because it's fun for me and for spare income. If you ask me what I do, I'll say I'm a writer. My short-story collection won the Michener-Copernicus award and will be published by Bloomsbury Books in 2019. I've won writing honors from a number of magazines and institutions including American Short Fiction, New York Times, Granta, Playboy, Glimmer Train, Cornell College, Prairie Lights, etc.

    Education

Brown University (BA) - Iowa Writers' Workshop (MFA) - University of Denver (Ph.D.)

I have perfect or 99th percentile scores on the SAT, ACT, SAT II, and GRE tests. I've published peer-reviewed academic scholarship on American literature and a book of fiction with Bloomsbury.

I'm a 2006 graduate of Brown University, where I studied writing, literature, math, and critical theory among other things and a 2012 graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop, which many consider the best writing program in the world. I've worked as a tutor, teacher, or professor for twelve years. I taught high school math and high school English before entering graduate school. From 2012 to 2014, I served as the writer-in-residence at Cornell College, where I taught creative writing. I have perfect or 99th percentile scores on the SAT, ACT, SAT II, and GRE tests. And I've scored in the 99th percentile on unofficial GMAT exams.

As a teacher, I build on students’ natural strengths and native intellectual curiosity. Students reinforce academic content, personalize their learning process, and learn how to thrive in educational institutions.

I offer one-on-one or small-group tutoring in math, English, reading, writing, social studies, and science for students of all ages and ability levels. In addition to academic content, I teach study skills, time and stress management, effective reading, and executive function.

I'm a Ph.D. candidate in English and on the faculty at Denver's Lighthouse Writers Workshop where I teach fiction and college-essay workshops. I've published peer-reviewed articles in LIT: Literature Interpretation Theory and (forthcoming) in Twentieth-Century Literature. My short story collection AERIALISTS won the Michener-Copernicus Prize and is forthcoming from Bloomsbury Books. I'm currently living in Paris on fellowship working on my second book.

    Experience / Qualifications

    TEST PREP TUTORING:

Standardized tests are not strong predictors of your success in college, graduate school, or your career. They are, however, fierce gatekeepers. A bad day at the testing center can end your application season; a good score can save you tens of thousands of tuition dollars and wildly open your professional horizons. Studying for these tests is not like studying for your Biology final. It's more like triathlon (or decathlon!) training. My approach breaks down like this:

    (1) Focused teaching/review of test content: these tests cover a wide but delimited range of math, grammar, and logic concepts, often disguising how they appear. At whatever pace you need, we'll build your proficiency with the math and verbal content and build your "test literacy"--your expertise in how the exam spins a few dozen concepts into ever-new questions.

    (2) Good habits. First and foremost, standardized tests measure how good you are at standardized tests. They measure your time-management, anxiety-management, and endurance at least as much they measure your math and verbal chops. We'll do time trials and stress tests and develop personal techniques for keeping your wits about you come test day.

    (3) Homework. No coach can get you through 26.2 miles if you don't do your daily runs. Together, we'll design a rigorous, efficient, and achievable homework schedule that will get you in shape. I can advise you on which study materials to buy and provide some I've written myself.

My test-prep qualifications. Out of college, I taught GRE, GMAT, LSAT, SAT and ACT classes for Kaplan Test Prep. I've tutored independently since 2009. I have perfect or 99th percentile scores on the GRE, SAT, ACT English, ACT Math, ACT Reading, SAT II Writing, SAT II Math IIC, SAT II Physics, AP English Language, AP English Lit AP Calc BC, AP Physics AB, AP US History, and AP European History.

    AFTER-SCHOOL TUTORING:

As an after-school tutor, my primary goal is to develop your student's independence and love of learning. Our starting point is always the student's natural strengths and curiosities. I'll teach you how to personalize your learning process to keep yourself challenged, excited, and engaged.

I'm comfortable tutoring most middle-school and high-school subjects. I love teaching all math. I love teaching writing and lit. History, physics, etc. I worked as a high school math teacher and language arts teacher before returning to graduate school. I've taught creative and academic writing at Brown University, the University of Iowa, and Cornell College. Through the International Writing Program, I’ve taught distance-learning literature courses in Kirkuk, Iraq and Hargeisa, Somalia. I can challenge ace students who are bored with their As or help students fighting not to fail.
