US History- private lessons in analysis, essay writing and exam prep

I have deeply enjoyed US History since high school, where I received top marks, through university to the present, where I still read and learn history on a regular basis. I am most familiar with mainland history from US Independence to the present day, however am always trying to improve my knowledge about Native American history, and the territories. I have also studied extensively the impact of the US on the wider world and it's relations with the global community.

I believe it is important to teach history from a wide variety of perspectives. In recent years, I have particularly tried to focus on history retold from the perspective of those left out of the traditional view, which is really just anyone who isn't a white, upper-class, European male. This broader and more complex view of history leads to a more nuanced understanding of the past, particularly from a social perspective.

In particular I have experience in exam preparation and essay writing. I have also worked and volunteered in the humanitarian sector for 10 years, focusing primarily on refugee and asylum seeker issues and education. I speak Spanish, advanced French and Portuguese and basic Turkish. In my spare time I love reading and salsa dancing.

    Experience / Qualifications

My basic premise is that anything you can say, you should be able to write. My strengths are in thematic reading of the text, literary techniques and essay writing. I usually work with the student to help them build a strong understanding of the text, and its wider historical and social content, before helping them to understand its themes and key ideas. From there I work with my students to strengthen their writing (factual or creative) and building of their own ideas on paper. I use a variety of exercises and mediums (film, poetry, novels, rap etc) to achieve this. As writing is an ever-evolving field, I feel learning is very much a two-way process, and try to use dialogue, discussion and contextual materials and examples to build the student's understanding. I really enjoy this field and try to bring my enthusiasm, knowledge and experience to every class I teach.
¡Hola! ¿Qué tal? I have been speaking Spanish for seven years and studied it as a minor in my Bachelor's degree. I have lived and volunteered in Spain and travel there regularly, aswell as read, speak and write in Spanish daily. Not only do I have a strong understanding of Spanish grammar and vocabulary and a deep love of the language but I also understand how to learn it, as it is my second of five languages. As I have done when teaching Spanish in the past, I'm able to understand the conceptual gaps and differences between the student's first language (particularly if it's Latin or Asian) and work with the student to jump over those hurdles towards greater comprehension. I use a communicative approach which focuses on building the student's fluency and confidence. Finally, I have a strong understanding of Spanish and Latin American culture and history, and so am able to use interesting and contextually relevant materials to keep lessons engaging and lively.
Hi! I would really love to help you improve your confidence and fluency in English. I'm an Australian currently living in Turkey and I specialise in IELTS and TOEFL preparation, conversational English and essay writing. I graduated from the University of Sydney with a distinction average and am currently learning my fifth language, so I understand how to learn a new language. My teaching style is fun, interesting and personalised to your learning style. Please get in touch to organise a lesson!

I have deeply enjoyed European History high school, where I received top marks, through university to the present, where I still read and learn history on a regular basis. I am familiar not only with the impact of wider trends such as the printing press, reformation, industrialization and colonization across history but also with the specific histories (and personalities that make them) of the UK, France, Germany, Russia and Spain. Since learning the Annales approach to history I have been really keen about learning history from a wide variety of perspectives. In recent years, I have particularly tried to focus on history retold from the perspective of those left out of the traditional view, which is really just anyone who isn't a white, upper-class and male. This broader and more complex view of history leads to a more nuanced understanding of the past, particularly from a social perspective.
I have deeply enjoyed Australian History since high school, where I received top marks, through university to the present, where I still read and learn history on a regular basis. I am most familiar with Australian history from European arrival, through Federation and the conflicts of the 21st century, through to present day. However am always trying to improve my knowledge of Indigenous history. I have also studied extensively Australia's global relationships over time, with countries such as the UK, the US and China. I believe it is important to teach history from a wide variety of perspectives. In recent years, I have particularly tried to focus on history retold from the perspective of those left out of the traditional view, which is really just anyone who isn't a white, upper-class, European male. I deeply enjoy Shakespeare and have been tutoring Shakespeare for eight years now. I did well in English in high school and have been tutoring English for several years, and Shakespeare has always been an integral part of that. I generally have two primary goals. Firstly, helping students to understand the language itself. If a student is new to Shakespeare or lacking confidence in English, the plays can seem intelligible. However, if you work through the text patiently with a student, and show them how it works with modern day English, their confidence generally grows and so does the accessibility of the text for them. This leads me to my second goal with the student, which is to help them understand the themes and value of the text, so they can see how it relates to their reality. Depending on the student’s engagement, objectives and learning style, this can be done a variety of ways such as using modern adaptations, videos or breaking it down line by line. I work to be flexibly and adapt my teaching to the student as much as possible, to ensure the most positive experience for them.
This class is aimed to provide guidance and help for anyone studying political science, government or international relations. I aim to structure all my lessons to broaden my student's worldview, challenge their assumptions and test the logic of their arguments. I am able to bring a unique synthesis of perspectives to all my lessons to help my students to use political science, government and IR theories to analysis current global issues. I also have a strong background in essay writing and logic which I use to help test and strengthen the theses of their essays. As this is an ever-evolving field, I feel learning is very much a two-way process, and try to use dialogue, discussion and contextual materials and examples to build the student's understanding. I really enjoy this field and try to bring my enthusiasm, knowledge and experience to every class I teach.
I have deeply enjoyed history and historiography from high school, where I received top marks, through university, where we studied history from Australia, the Americas, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, to the present, where I still read and learn history on a regular basis. In recent years, I have particularly tried to focus on history retold from the perspective of those left out of the traditional view, which is really just anyone who isn't a white, upper-class, European male. This broader and more complex view of history leads to a more nuanced understanding of the past, particularly from a social perspective. I try to bring this knowledge to the classroom, to help the student understand history contextually and how it is shaped through an interplay of individual personalities and social, economic and political trends. I work to include as much primary evidence as possible and always encourage students to approach both primary and secondary sources critically, considering the bias and intention of the source. If I'm not familiar enough with the particular aspect of history the student is studying, I will do the necessary research to be able to help them competently. I really enjoy history and try to bring my enthusiasm, knowledge and experience to every class I teach.

Spanish Tutoring and History Tutoring for ages 12-18
I am offering tutoring in History and looking for tutees from Primary school to upper Secondary school students and also looking for tutees for Spanish at any age range. As bilingual British National who grew up in Madrid in an International British School: King's College Madrid, I have been speaking, listening and writing in Spanish from an early age. I have experience in being able to switch between languages effectively and I find it easy to engage in conversation in both Spanish and English. I have also had previous experience in teaching English to Spanish students for which I believe the skills are transferrable to teaching Spanish to English students. During the sessions, I would help with completing grammar exercises as well as work on conversational topics in order to provide a wider range of vocabulary to help with oral as well as written exams. I believe it is important to set exercises and tests during the sessions so I can figure out the main difficulties that the student has in writing in Spanish in order to tackle these problems and help the student. I am outgoing, patient and eager to help students build up their confidence in being able to comfortably speak a foreign language (Spanish) as well as build on their grammar and knowledge of Spanish culture. As well as this, I have recently graduated from The University of Kent where I obtained a 1st Class Honours in my degree. The degree covered a wide range of IGCSE and A level History topics including International History between World Wars as well as American, Russian, African, Indian and Spanish history during the 20th Century. With this, the sessions will consist of providing greater knowledge to the study of History, not only focusing on learning facts, but mainly the significance behind them in leading to other events and the analytical process comparing and contrasting certain viewpoints in order to provide two sides of an argument. My teaching style, therefore, involves following exam structures and working out the key features of writing history essays, as well as setting writing exercises to prepare for exams with the short time available to write said essays. I understand the difficulties that exist for GCSE and A-Level History students and I believe my experience will help to push students to understand the main points to work on when preparing for an essay or exam.

Prehistoric archaeology of the British Isles - 6 lesson course
Prehistoric Archaeology of the British Isles Delve into the past with local Dr Amber as she introduces you to the prehistory of the British Isles. The course is aimed at anyone who is interested in the archaeology of Britain. It will cover 500,000 years of prehistory from the Palaeolithic to the Iron age, providing you with a grounding in British prehistoric archaeology and the changing ways of life over this vast period. Lesson 1 The course outline will follow the chronology of prehistory, starting with the Palaeolithic (Old Stone Age) (500,000-10,000 BC). This week will introduce the different hominin species, such as Homo erectus, Neanderthals and Homo sapiens and their use of fire, tools and rock art. Lesson 2 This week will discuss the changes we see in Britain in the Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age) (10,000-4,000 BC), including the use of microlithic (small) flint tools, the hunter-gatherer lifestyle and rock art. The much-debated change from the Mesolithic to the Neolithic period will also be introduced. Lesson 3 Week three will discuss the Neolithic (New Stone Age) proper (4,000-2300 BC). This period is seen as the single most important economic transition in British History due to the beginning of farming, large scale trade networks and new ways of burying the dead. Lesson 4 We will look at the technological changes in the Bronze Age (2300-800 BC) when copper, bronze and gold objects and weapons were first produced. Themes such as violence, the burial of the dead and the deposition of metal hoards will be discussed. Lesson 5 The final week of the course will discuss the last period of British Prehistory, the Iron Age (800BC-43AD). The Celtic affiliation we often link with this period will be discussed along with the development of iron technology and the use of domestic areas for ritual. The shift into the Roman period will also be introduced to provide a full rounded introduction to British Prehistory.

    Lewis
Cambridge Graduate offering bespoke History, Politics, and English tuition.
Overview: I offer bespoke tutoring services to school pupils and individuals studying History, Politics, and English. With a background in History and experience in the teaching and media sectors, I provide a professional, insightful, and comprehensive service aimed at improving a client's understanding of a topic, their confidence within it, and targeting specific issues and skills as required. I also provide advice on university selection and applications, building on experience as an applicant myself and coach for successful applicants to highly selective universities (including Oxford, St Andrews, and UCL). Teaching methodology: I believe that the best way to teach is to communicate, work out the student's needs with them, and proceed from there. We live in a diverse world, and it's important to reflect that diversity in teaching. I believe in using a variety of sources to help teach, ranging from films, to books, to music clips. This is particularly important in the context of clients with LS needs, as a focus on one kind of source can impact the pupil's experience, and hinder their success. My lessons are based on a core Learning Objective, changing from lesson to lesson with the curriculum. Around that, there will be a series of case studies, examples, and anecdotes, with personalised support for exam answers if required. Half the battle with the humanities is ensuring that good ideas are communicated well- I seek to teach history and support the development of those communication skills to ensure that the pupil's ability is reflected.
