Africa in Cinema--How Hollywood portrays Africa than

In the Africa in Cinema course, Ahmed covers the rich, and compelling historical and contemporary events that have taken place on the African continent, as represented through films and documentaries. The course content includes the historical development of films in Africa, a critical analysis of the various fiction, non-fiction, and documentary genres, and an evaluation of film theory related to African film. Students are also asked to compare Hollywood, Nollywood (Nigeria), and Ghallywood (Ghana) genres in terms of their interpretations and representations of the past, present, and future. Ahmed’s explanation of the context of these films enriches his classroom discussions, and provides space for others to express their opinions. Students’ discussions are often focused on the historical accuracy of films, and especially Hollywood’s dismissal or manipulation of facts that leads to an oversimplification of issues related to Africa. Too often Hollywood perpetuates myths that Africa is characterized only by conflicts, genocide, poverty, lack of education, and political and economic instability. Ahmed challenges his internationally diverse student audience to critically analyze worldview stereotypes in order to determine what is true versus what is fiction. Ahmed’s knowledge in these areas will hopefully be appealing not only to your students and faculty, but also to community audiences.

In the Introduction to Contemporary Africa course, Ahmed covers Africa’s diversity in terms of history, population, culture, problems, human and ecological potentials. He introduces students to a range of factors that contribute to the uniqueness of contemporary African societies and identity of the different regions of the continent. The course highlights the institutional, political, social, and economic forces that have played critical roles in the transformation of African nations since their independence. With the students’ involvement in theoretical and practical foundations, Ahmed examines the influence of geopolitical factors in the development of African societies and discusses the potentials of African regional organization integration dynamics. Appropriately, he engages students to enumerate the key factors that contribute to internationalization of Africa’s individual countries; thereby identifying the complexities that engulf African communities to limit their global capacity. Popular belief about the continent embraces the notions of striking poverty, unemployment, gender inequality, health inadequacies, political turmoil, environmental degradation, famine, ethnic division, population dynamics, poor climatic conditions, trade disparities, to name a few. Ahmed inspires students to take a holistic approach in learning and developing a wider view of the diverse situations Africa countries experience. At the end of the course, Ahmed encourages students to compare contemporary Africa issues with those in other regions of the world.
