Cello Lessons, Practice Coach, Audition Preparation

I have been teaching cello for over ten years. My students' levels have ranged from picking up the cello for the first time to preparing for auditioning to music conservatories at the college and pre-college level. I've worked with students as young as 5 years old as well as adults. I am a graduate of The Juilliard School, and have experience teaching at Juilliard Pre-College. I moved to The Netherlands in September of 2019 and have since then earned an Artist Certificate at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague in baroque cello. Teaching has been a huge part of my life as a performing musician, as it encourages a constant curiosity of showing others how to make music and enjoy music themselves through the cello.

About Me

Hailed for her “refined musicality and her clear, singing tone” (Danbury News Times) cellist Madeleine Bouissou has a vision to redefine the purpose of performing on classical instruments among her peers and pupils. From a young age, Madeleine displayed an unorthodox curiosity towards life (she was that kid who wore two different shoes) and from the moment she picked up the cello, her hunger for answers was fed with expression through music.

She enrolled in Juilliard Pre-College at the age of 14 and then continued at The Juilliard School where she completed her bachelor’s degree. Madeleine quickly became an advocate for new music, as she found a constant sense of discovery, freedom from tradition, and responsibility to make new composers’ voices heard through new music. This passion led her to tour with Kate Simko’s London Electronic Orchestra in 2017.

When Madeleine found the baroque cello her world changed as it did through new music. The combination of finding new technique with gut strings and focus on research to inform musical decisions gave her a renewed sense of purpose and inspired her to earn her master’s degree as a full scholarship student in historical performance at Juilliard where she had the privilege of performing as a soloist alongside such luminaries as violinist Rachel Podger. Her two worlds of contemporary and historically-informed performance came together when she was a featured soloist giving the world premiere performance of Varsha by Reena Esmail on baroque cello, as part of the Seven Last Words Project at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City.

Her deepest passion is approaching canonic repertoire for classical instruments in a historically-informed way with the goal to infuse freshness in this repertoire. Last summer she was invited back to perform as a laureate at the Valley of the Moon Music Festival in Sonoma Valley where she performed with violinists Rachel Barton-Pine and Cynthia Freivogel. Her recent performance with Charles Neidich in Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet promoted the New York Concert Review to praise her “total involvement with the inner life of the lowest voice, [which] was a consistent pleasure.” Since her graduation in May of 2019, she has appeared with ensembles such as the Boston Early Music Festival, the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, Theater of Early Music, and The Sebastians. She also earned her Artist Certificate diploma from The Royal Conservatory of The Hague in baroque cello.

Madeleine grew up in a French restaurant with two chefs as parents. Raised with fine food and intense work ethic, she values hard work and creative expression. She maintains an active career as a freelance cellist and teacher based in The Hague. Madeleine is also a proud fellow of the English Consort in America fellowship.

Cello lessons in The Hague for all ages and levels
Every student needs a teacher who gives personal attention and is flexible, which is why I always adapt to the student's individual needs and different speeds of learning. Everyone is capable of making music, we only need to develop our skills, and with the right tools the world of music opens up. I am deeply convinced that music is something that we all need and find the most comforting in the trickiest situations. Music helps to express emotions and the cello is an instrument that is immensely similar to the human voice. I hope that every student of mine will find their voice and reveal their feelings while playing cello. Let’s meet in our first lesson and enjoy the world of music!

Cello lessons for anyone, anywhere you are and for all levels.
Classes suitable for all ages, levels and tastes. It is not required to have prior knowledge of music. In my classes I offer you in a pleasant and effective way the mind-body integration with the cello. I will quickly teach you how to solve a passage, find the root of a problem, clarify solfeo doubts and incorporate it into the cello with a physical feeling of comfort, that you feel comfortable and that you can finally enjoy the music you are able to make:) If you are starting into the cello, all the above is valid, it will be your base for takeoff! And if you are already initiated in the instrument, my classes will serve as reinforcement to be able to incorporate new elements that will facilitate your execution. It is a great pleasure for me to be able to accompany each of my students on the path of learning such a beautiful instrument and I am committed to giving my best every moment. I will try to teach you the way you need, individually for each student, and up to the level you want to reach. Looking forward to meet you!

Carla Peña
Let's play together! - Cello lessons for all levels and ages
My name is Carla Peña and I come from Barcelona. Since I was a child, music has played an important role in my life. I started learning music when I was 4 years old and cello when at the age of 6. I discovered my love for music and that is what I share with my students. I have around 15 pupils of all levels and ages and I teach at my own studio (De Constant Rebecquestraat 3) or at your place! If you are in The Hague area and you want to learn the cello or improve your playing, you are welcome to do lessons with me! FIRST LESSON: The first lesson consists of getting to know each other. This is essential to choose the best teaching approach. All the students are unique, that is why I always choose the method that adapts better to your needs. Then, we elaborate a personal plan, depending on your level, expectations, practice time, and taste. TECHNIQUE: Learning the proper technique of the instrument is very important to avoid injuries and to be able to express ourselves and perform our musical ideas in a successful way. That is why we learn nice songs in different styles, depending on your taste (from classical to jazz, film music, pop, etc.) and we combine it with cello method books with progressive exercises to improve the cello knowledge. In the case of young beginners, we also play cello games during the lesson to make the learning experience dynamic and fun! Children can lose attention and get bored very quickly! Playing together is an essential part of enjoying music. Therefore, the last part of the lesson always consists of playing cello duets and having fun! ABOUT ME: I studied my Bachelor in Conservatori Superior del Liceu in Barcelona, with professor Amparo Lacruz. Then, I decided to continue my studies at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague in the class of Michel Strauss and Jan-Ype Nota. During my studies in The Hague, I did a teaching internship at the Royal Conservatory as a part of their Minor in Music Education. I also taught in several Music Schools during my studies in Spain. Currently, I teach private students in The Hague and I created a cultural center in The Hague called Pandora Studio. I play regularly in two chamber music ensembles: Trio Jakob and Azalaïs Quartet.

Cello Lessons for all levels, Classical and Pop music
It is beautiful to be able to play a musical instrument. However, when looking to learn the cello, one needs regular accompaniment. Either if you want to engage in a hobby or if you want to learn and develop your skills in a more serious way, I will adapt your lessons to your ambitions and desires towards your cello lessons. The duration of our lessons can be flexible according to the necessity or possibility of the student. Other artistic situations can be offered depending on what you show through the lessons, as the participation in cello ensembles, preparation for competitions (for students who will take the cello further in their studies), preparation for other exams that the student may want to apply to out-side our lessons, as others which may be proposed by the student him-self. There is also the opportunity to improve and practice your English, Portuguese, Spanish or Czech since these are the languages in which I can teach, according to the students preference. The most important thing is that you love music so that we can make some together!!

Cello lesson, baroque cello lesson, ensemble lesson in The Hague
Are you looking for cello lessons? I have been giving cello lessons to all ages and levels for 10 years now. The cello is an extremely versatile instrument and therefore never gets boring, even after years of study there is still so much to discover! I also teach Baroque music for more advanced students. In these lessons I will go into the regional technique, the basso continuo playing, ornamentation, etc. This can be done on a modern cello as well as on a baroque cello. I also regularly coach ensembles (early and classical music). I then pay a lot of attention to the function of each voice and the creation of an ensemble sound.

For anyone who wants to learn the cello, get better at it, and have fun with it! At the moment I have one full size cello and bow that I can either lend (with monthly cost) or sell.
