Beginner's Piano Instruction / Learn to Play the Piano!

I can offer beginner's lessons in piano and keyboard to adults or children, this includes both playing and reading music - happy to work with anyone who is keen to learn to play the keyboard or read musical notation!
Normally this will be for one lesson per week, with clear direction for practice at home between lessons given - the more you play the quicker you learn (and the more nimble your fingers become!).
I can offer lessons in my home in the Meadowbank area of Edinburgh, or travel to you if you have a piano at home.
I can also work around your schedule - the availability below is just an illustration, so please feel free to ask about other times or days.

Extra information

You will need a keyboard with all 88 keys to practice on between lessons - if you don't have a piano, starting out a small electronic keyboard would probably do fine, but a proper piano will help - check at your local schools or community centers too!

About Me

I have had a fortunate career path that has taken me in a lot of different directions, all of which have added to the skills and knowledge I use now in supporting people with personal and professional development. I emigrated from the US to the UK in 1995 and have made my home mainly in Edinburgh since then, with two years in Bradford Yorkshire. I currently work across the central belt of Scotland, primarily as an Independent Practice Teacher, Assessor and Supervisor, with a bit of Family Group Decision Making work as well. Self-employment, and the ability to define my job as opportunities arise, suits me well! I have also previously been a family support worker, a mentoring project coordinator and a counsellor, also working for a time as a guard on the trains, which got me around a bit. You can say I am a Jack(ie) of All Trades in some ways, but over the years I have gained a level of expertise in one thing - personal development, and the journey of change. I work creatively, intuitively and sensitively to adapt to the needs of the person or people I am working with, let me know if you have an idea to explore!

Education

BA Anthropology (University of Utah), PGDip Forensic Anthropology (Bradford University), PGCert Counselling (Edinburgh University), Practice Teaching Award (SSSC Learning Network East), SVQ III Children and Young People (Stevenson College), Family Group Decision Making (KALM Solutions)

Experience / Qualifications

Training or research in: evaluation methods, evidence-based practice, presentation skills, group work and group dynanmics, Advocacy - as as you can see from the photo below, I was nominated for Scottish Association of Social Workers Practice Teacher of the Year award! I have been an Assessor to people working towards the Practice Teaching Award, a University Tutor and also undertaken Professional Supervision and Career Mentoring.
I have been working in the Adult Learning and Career Development sectors for more than 12 years, supporting people to grow and develop both personally and professionally. I have also worked in counselling settings with young people, adults and couples, as well as managing a mentoring project and undertaking academic proof-reading, and all these experiences inform my methods now. I blend a person-centred focus with a practical and structured approach to good effect. I believe that professional development goes hand-in-hand with increased understanding of self and others, also known as emotional intelligence. Understanding and valuing your own strengths and vulnerabilities helps you communicate more strongly and create more honest, productive relationships, both at home and at work, and can impact on your ability to make a convincing argument in written form as well. I am happy to meet you at your home, at my home or at another location convenient to us both, or we can work via webcam. I normally prepare tasks or concepts to consider between meetings, and always tailor the sessions to what you most need or want to get out of them. If you want a simple listening ear, that is fine - if you want someone to create a schedule to help you stick to goals, I can do that. We can decide between us what might best help you get where you want to in your life or career. The availability in the calendar below is just a guide, I can work around your schedule, so please feel free to ask about specific days or times.

Alec
Drum Teacher available for technical and motivational lessons online
If you want to know not just about drum techniques and playing, but also about its history and musicianship, you'll definitely have a unique experience with my lessons. I believe drumming is not just about playing and knowing your chops, but also about being able to listen to others in the band and make sure you "be" part of the music, without resorting to thrashing around and proving to others what kind of noise you can make. Hence the phrase "A band should be as good as its drummer". :) Drumming is undoubtedly a way of building up your self-confidence, in order to establish your identity. The drums are a great use to channel your emotions, so long as you don't have to pull a Keith Moon. ;) I can also add keyboards to the mix.... But why is it relevant for a drummer, you may ask? Well, although it may look the contrary from the outside, having an ear for other instruments and chords is absolutely essential, because both your drumming nd ability to improvise contributes to the atmosphere of each song. If you want to know more, do please get in touch. I look forward to rocking out with you! :)

Piano, Harpsichord, Musical Expression lessons! Come, try and have fun learning
Hello, I'm Catarina, I come from Portugal and I have about seven years of experience in teaching Piano, Harpsichord, musical expression, music theory and reading music. I usually set the goals for the academic year with the student, usually divided by quarter, and it's always possible to adjust them, according to the student's expectations, difficulties and needs. For now, I can't speak Dutch but that's about to change, since I'm already learning it! You can learn in Portuguese, of course, in English, Spanish and French (I also have experience teaching foreign students). Hope to hear from you. Met vriendelijke groet :) Catarina

Mona
Piano, Keyboard, Ukulele and Music Tutor - Edinburgh
Hi, I am Mona, nice to meet you! I am a third year music student at the University of Edinburgh. I believe that music is powerful. It helps us to work through and express our emotions, as well as connect and communicate with others. I look forward to making music with you! Piano I have played the piano for over twelve years and I started giving piano lessons three years ago. I have taught children as young as five, as well as adults. I mainly play and teach Classical music, but also enjoy and teach minimalist music and film music repertoire. I also have an interest in and teach improvisation on the piano. Songwriting/Composition/Improvisation I use songwriting, composing and improvising daily to express myself. This is my favourite part of music - Expectations go by the wayside, we are in flow and in the present moment. I have taught improvisation to my piano students and I have collaborated with others in writing songs as well as composing. Music Theory/Music History I enjoy the academic and theoretical side of music, hence why I chose to pursue my music studies at University. I write music reviews and articles for the Student newspaper, and I am just starting to write for an online music blog. I continue to study and write about music for my academic studies and did so throughout school, so I can help you with your GCSE/A level music!

PIANO LESSONS: What about learning how to play the piano? (in person and online)
Piano, the instrument used by the romantics to make their most beautiful music, but also by the most experimental and modern composers to create their amazing music. Isn't it a great instrument to play? With more than 5 years of experience teaching in music schools and 8 years as a private piano teacher, I developed an efficient and "fun"-focusing way to teach how to play the instrument. Every student is different, so also the way to play and learn shall be different, which makes every single lesson special and rewarding. I also offer the possibility of teaching in groups: if you want to know more about this option. I hope I become the teacher you want and need!
