Saxophone Course and Music Course - Brussels

This course is for anyone that's interested to play the saxophone at any level, from the very beginners to students interested in more advanced topics such as improvisation, both in unconventional ways or more founded on the tradition of Jazz. The course will be adapted to the pupils goals and level, with a demanding but not overpowering approach. The frequency can also be optimized to the pupil's necessities: weekly, bi-weekly or monthly (not less). I believe that the main goal of a mentor should ultimately to make the pupil become his own teacher and establish an empatic two-way learning process.

My name is Federico and I am a professional and Award Winning saxophone player. I currently work at Koninklijk Conservatorium of Bruxelles as an Assistant Professor of Jeroen Van Herzeele the jazz saxophone professor. I graduated at Conservatorio G.Martucci of Salerno (Italy) and had both Bachelor and Master with full marks with honors. During the course of my studies i also spent two academic years abroad , one at the Kask and Conservatorium of Ghent with the supervision of Bart Defoort and one at the Koninklijk Conservatorium of Bruxelles with John Ruocco. In 2017 i won the "Massimo Urbani International Jazz Competition" prize that saw as head of the jury Kurt Rosenwinkel & Fabrizio Bosso. I play in several Jazz bands and I have been performing all around Europe. I recorded a solo album called "Right Now" with the famous Italian label "Philology Records" & the album"Supernova" with my own band. I also recorded several albums with different bands and of many styles, from jazz, funk to pop. I toured with the famous Italian Drummer Tullio De Piscopo (Pino Daniele, Mina, Astor Piazzolla's drummer) and also had the chance to make a variety of television appearances on Italian National Television (Rai1, Rai5, Rai3). Musician graduated in jazz saxophone at the KCB (Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel) offers individual lessons for begginers and intermediate level students. Experienced since 2014 in teaching with different age groups, the lesson is adapted to the interests and needs of each student. Diversity of teaching materials are used: listening and imitating exercises, technical exercises, music theory applicated to improvisation, sight-reading and more.

Student at the Brussels Conservatory. From practical lessons to theoretical notions, I know how to adapt to the student and his interests to provide a course that really brings him the elements that will allow him to quickly flourish in the musical field. With already 3 years of course experience in non-profit organizations and in particular, I usually train students of all ages, beginners or more advanced. I am open to a large number of musical styles, current or old, focusing my thought on a "musical whole". I currently specialize in classical and contemporary saxophone but I am also very open to improvisation and live music such as jazz and the styles that derive from it, but also to electronic music. Before, he also followed a MASTER of INTERPRETATION at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels (2015-2017) in the class of Alain Crepin and Simon Diricq. He studied at the "Musikene" (Higher Conservatory of Music of the Basque Country) with Eric Devallon, Tomás Jérez, Antonio Felipe Belijar and Miguel Ángel Lorente. Passionate about multidisciplinary artistic creation, he thinks of mixing all the arts in the same show as an aesthetic finality. We could observe this type of research in his project for his final master's recital in Brussels where he created a project based on Maslow's hierarchy of human needs theory where he mixes live, recorded, music and music. dance, play of light and effects under the name of: “according to Maslow…” In his career as a concert artist, he has played in different ensembles (solo, duo, trio, quartet, orchestra performances, etc.) and in different countries such as Japan (Artisanal music fair “Suono Italia” 2010), Belgium (Festival Musiq3 2016 ), Artonov Festival at BOZAR in 2016…), France (Dax chamber music festival 2011) or Spain (“Quincena Musical” music festival 2015, Aste Nagusia 2015, Heineken Jazzaldia 2014, Kutxa Festival 2015, Intercentros Melómano 2010).

Learn to play to decipher scores and improvise by ear or by reading and analyzing chord charts. This course will adapt to your level of play: simple harmonies for beginners and more complex depending on the degree of mastery of the instrument. This course also includes a thorough introduction to harmony.

How does a normal saxophone lesson look? A saxophone lesson is completely different every time. Maybe one week we'll learn a difficult technical piece and the next week a popular song of you choice. Sometimes we talk a little bit about music theory, other times we may be improvising. The first lessons we'll focus on building a good foundation: a perfect posture, the right breathing technique, finger- and mouth-positioning. A little knowledge about the instrument itself is certainly not skipped. Do I have to know music theory beforehand? No. During the lesson I will teach you music theory, to immediately apply it in practice. Rest assured, this does not precede playing the saxophone. For the people who already have a background in music theory, all the better. In the lessons I can refine your theoretical knowledge. How often do classes take place? You choose how often the saxophone lessons take place, this always depends on what you want to achieve yourself. It goes without saying that the more regularly you take lessons, the greater my commitment is. This is because the follow-up is easier. This of course depends entirely on your own work / school / life schedule. How often will I have to practice? Learning any instrument takes time and effort. The ideal solution is that you can practice a little bit every day, but I know that this is not possible for many. It is mainly a matter of exercising as consistently as possible. Preferably five minutes every day, then once a week for two hours. How long does it take before I can play known songs? That depends entirely on yourself. If you can practice every day from day one, it won't be long at all. If, on the other hand, you take your saxophone once every two weeks, it can take longer From and until what age can I learn to play the saxophone? There is no age on music. The young children can test whether they can hold a saxophone. For the little ones it is advisable to learn to play the saxophone on a curved soprano. The alt saxophone is the best option for all other interested people.
