Viola lessons, all levels (in English, Russian, French or German)

Hi there, my name is Toby and I’m a professional viola, violin and music theory teacher based in Berlin. I teach in person at students' location and my location as well as online.

As well as regular instrumental teaching and ensemble coaching of all age groups and levels, I’ve led numerous professional workshops, including ‘Music First’ and ‘Music Masters’ workshops in London and was an assistant on the Primary Arpeggione viola course and Springgrove music competition. I teach in English, Russian, French and German and am trained in a variety of methods, including Suzuki, regularly preparing students for music exams at all levels. I am currently a member of the European String Teachers’ Association, and have participated in ESTA conferences across Europe.

I also regularly accompany students on the piano, and work on music theory, aural and sight reading skills for exams, including on grades in theory and academic exams across all stages.

As a performing musician, I've played as a soloist in venues across Europe and participated in several international competitions, notably receiving the Barbirolli prize at the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition 2019. I was a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra in 2018, and a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain from 2014-2015, appearing on BBC Radio 3 broadcasts and a televised BBC Prom, as well as being involved in the NYO outreach programme ‘inspire’ in schools across London, including workshops and interactive performances at the Royal Festival Hall.

Reviews:

Tatyana M.
Toby is a fantastic teacher. He is very reliable as he is consistently organized and punctual. I constantly see progress in my child’s music skills because every lesson Toby delivers is effective and well-structured. I highly recommend him to all who wish to learn or improve on their music skills.

Pamela B.
Toby is really a great teacher, who teaches pieces well and teases out the feeling while playing. We particularly liked that. Good technique is one thing, but feeling the music is such an important element in music and in learning a piece of music. He also teaches theory very well!

Hanna S.
Toby can explain things very well and understandably, is patient and friendly and easily adapts to the level of the student

Knowledgeable and frank, Toby was able to provide me with crucial information quickly and efficiently.
Toby kann die Dinge sehr gut und verständlich erklären, ist geduldig und freundlich und passt sich dem Niveau des Schülers problemlos an.
Toby is an excellent English teacher. I wanted to focus on my pronunciation and accent. He had patiently walked together with me with the various methods. I loved so much how he taught me English. And I started hearing from multiple friends that my English has improved. Significantly! These compliments made our days :) I would be pleased to recommend him.
Toby is an excellent tutor with top teaching skills..he teaches music theory in a way my 12 year old son understands the lesson easily; Toby is very attentive to my son's needs...
Toby is an outstanding instructor and works with children very naturally. My 11 year old son has been taking lessons with Toby for over two months and is eager for each lesson. Toby is extremely talented, but beyond that, he engages my son deeply with the music itself, fundamental techniques, music theory, and even the interpretation of the music. Toby is kind, encouraging, and works with students at a level that is appropriate. He has allowed my son to chose music that if fun and interesting to practice, even though the pieces are challenging. We are located many time zones away from Toby, and the virtual lessons do not hinder our experience with him. In fact, I often sit in to listen to the lessons, as they are so good. My son has had a couple of lessons with Toby while company has been over, and everyone has commented on how amazing Toby is as an instructor. I can not recommend Toby enough and hope to continue lessons with him for a long time.

Violin & Viola lessons: classical style from beginner to advanced
Hello! My name is Julia, I am an American violist and violinist, and I teach in English. I am a graduate of The Juilliard School, an academist with the Kammerakademie Potsdam, and a former violist of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. I teach both viola and violin, from beginner to advanced levels, children and adults. I am also available for practice help sessions or one time coachings. I grew up learning through the Suzuki method, so I teach with an emphasis on developing a good ear as well as good instrumental technique. The most important thing I want my students to develop is a love for music in all its diverse forms and the instrumental technique that will allow them to involve themselves in that musical world! No matter what your goal is in taking lessons, I look forward to working with you or your child and discovering music together! Student Reviews: Gidget, 2021: Julia has been a phenomenal teacher. She is knowledgeable, patient, and very accommodating. I have been working with her since a very beginner level, and I have seen incredible progress. She has helped me prepare for auditions and to play in an orchestral environment as well. Could not recommend her more! Lauren 2019: My daughter loves Julia and has progressed so much in the past few months! Very engaging and professional Stephen 2019: Very inspiring!

Music, violin, viola and musical language classes
I can teach viola classes at all levels, and violin to students up to the sixth of Professional Grade. I can also teach music theory at all levels and support the study of other subjects taught at the conservatory, such as music history, analysis, orchestra, chamber music, etc. I believe that the teacher must be able to adapt a lot to the student, and especially in music I find it very important to understand the sensitivity and difficulties of each student. I consider myself a demanding person, but very empathetic and patient. It is very important to me, apart from all the factors that affect the performance, to emphasize the care of the posture and the tensions of the body to avoid injuries that can be caused by playing the viola or the violin.

Ana
Music classes of Violin and Viola from symphony orchestra member and school teacher
Hello, I'm Ana and I'm a graduated violist, a permanent member of Symphony orchestra "Stanislav Binicki" in Belgrade, Serbia. Before passing the audition in an orchestra in January of 2017, I was a professor of viola and violin in a special boarding school for musically gifted children "Skola za muzicke talente Cuprija", for five years. The school is founded and lead by the "Academy of music arts" in Belgrade. There are three schools in the world of that kind: in London, Moscow, and Serbia. My students got 25 1st and few 2nd awards in the republic and international competitions, and all of them signed in to desired academies in Germany, Canada and Serbia as first on the list and with full scholarships. We still keep in touch :) I was a member of the Royal chamber orchestra St. George for four years and took part in many world tours. I played also in National Radio and Television Orchestra in Serbia, Orchestra of National theater of Serbia, National Symphony orchestra of Montenegro and National Symphony orchestra in Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina. I was a member of orchestras which took part in projects "Bridges for the future" in Bern, Switzerland, “Festival Junger Kunstler”, Bayreuth, Germany, “Deutsch-Skandinavischen Jungend-Philharmonie” in Berlin, “Music days international festival” in Russe, Bulgaria, etc. I am currently a Ph.D. student in the 3rd year of studies in Management for culture and media, on the Faculty of Dramatic Arts, Belgrade. I tend to explain to students as simple and as effective as possible. My students enjoy classes, love to play and ask many questions :) I insist on good technique and posture because even if it takes a little bit more time in the beginning, it makes future progress easy and fast.

Christianne
Violin lesson. Due to music therapy background also specific for children who need extra attention / patience because of certain diagnostics.
Besides being very active as a performing violinist, I have also enjoyed teaching children and adults for years. I am a conservatory graduate and also a music therapist graduate. As a result, I have a lot of knowledge and patience when working with children/adults who need specific attention. This includes people with autism, gifted children and highly sensitive children. Of course you are also welcome as an adult with or without extra challenges. I myself have 3 children, 1 gifted and 1 highly sensitive. This has allowed me to teach these children with even more enthusiasm, understanding and patience. It is also possible to indicate in advance in conversation what your child will encounter and how violin lessons can help. For example, with autistic children, think of making contact, feeling. Gifted children experience extra challenges and learn to deal with the frustration that something does not work right away. Of course everyone is welcome with me! I teach from different methods, but look at what is appropriate for each student. I also work on the development of sound performance, solfege, music theory and improvisation. I have a classic basic method, but work tailor-made and see what someone needs. Light pop / film music is also a possibility.

Laura
the violin / viola all levels - learn by playing!
Learn by playing! I want to share my passion for the violin and the viola violin. With the instrumental techniques I also highlight the theory of music and how to train well. But I focus on the practice. What good is all the theory if you don't play? I adapt to the interests and ambitions of my students and support them in their individual journey with music

Fiachra
Violin or Viola Lessons for all ages and abilities
Greetings! I am currently studying viola performance and education at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. I also completed a Diploma in Music Education and Performance at the Royal Irish Academy of Music before coming to The Netherlands. I have had lots of experience teaching in schools and privately, and I get so much joy teaching people and helping them learn an instrument. My main goal as a teacher is to help students find their passion and love for music and for playing an instrument. I am also very practical in my approach to teaching, always trying to make things as clear as possible for each and every student to understand. I have plenty of experience teaching people of all ages. I also have a good knowledge of individual personalities and temperament which helps me to tailor the lesson to suit you individually. When teaching young children, I find that using various different games with and without the instrument helps a lot with their understanding and development. This resonates well with their impressive abilities to play for many hours every day - something which I think is very important for young children to make the most of while they have it. My understanding of the lessons is that every student should come out with the best feeling of wanting to improve their playing, and I always try to motivate every student in whichever way works best for them. I am also very open to using different approaches when it is not working for the student, and I am known to listen very well to feedback like this. I am flexible with the styles of music I teach and have experience in many different genres. If you need some ideas, together we can find the music that suits you best. The majority of students who start out do so on the violin, and some change to viola some time later. Some students who begin their musical journey on the violin go on to play not only viola but other stringed instruments such as cello and double bass if they grow away from the violin at any stage - so choosing violin in the beginning will certainly give you the most options.
