Piano lessons jazz/classical/beginner (EN/DE) British pianist

As a teacher I enjoy guiding my students down a wide variety of musical paths. Whether advanced classical pieces, specific harmonic concepts, an introduction to improvisation, favourite Joni Mitchell songs or teaching complete beginners to read music for the first time, I find this variety fun and rewarding. I like to encourage students to pursue their own interests, at the same time as bringing my own ideas to the table.

I teach all ages and abilities: on Mondays in my practice space at Flughafen Tempelhof and on Tuesdays at the Piano Center in Mitte.

About Me

"Mark is an exceptionally gifted pianist and composer, and a remarkable improviser" - John Taylor

Mark is a British pianist and composer based in Berlin, working at the intersection of various forms of composed and improvised music. He is a Yamaha Jazz Scholar, Peter Whittingham Award winner and has performed at numerous prominent locations across the UK, Germany, Denmark, France, Italy, Iceland, Finland, Portugal, Spain, Norway, Poland, Switzerland, Greece, Austria and the Netherlands, including for BBC Radio 3.

Mark works as a leader and side-person in diverse artistic projects internationally, notably his trio Bright Dark, LIUN + The Science Fiction Band, prepared solo piano project Verzerren, a duo with violinist Maria Reich, Book of Haikus, his large ensemble A Moveable Feast, Hayden Prosser’s Tether and many more collaborative settings Europe-wide. He has also performed classical works including Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time.

Mark owes a great deal to the many extraordinary musicians and mentors he was fortunate to encounter during his conservatoire studies in Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris, Amsterdam and Birmingham - John Taylor, Greg Cohen, Søren Kjærgaard, Harmen Fraanje and Liam Noble to name just a few. Upon completing bachelors studies in Birmingham he was awarded the Jazz Department Performance Prize, the Dean’s Award for exceptional achievement and the Principal’s Prize for outstanding contribution to the life of the Conservatoire.

Would you like to learn the trumpet or flugelhorn? Or are you looking for a new teacher to get a different input? Do you have problems or questions about playing the trumpet or flugelhorn? I'm studying instrumental pedagogy at the UdK with a major in trumpet and have been playing trumpet and flugelhorn in all styles (baroque, classical, romantic, modern, jazz, brass band music, funk, ska, pop, brass band, etc..) in changing ensembles for 18 years. for whom I also often arrange pieces. Since 2017 I have been giving trumpet and flugelhorn lessons for people at different levels. From bloody beginners to passionate amateur musicians, everything is included.

Julius
Piano Lessons in Berlin by a german native speaker
(German version further down/Deutsche Version weiter unten) I enjoy teaching because it requires a deeper knowledge of the material than if one is only performing music. I am continuously learning too. I do not think that it is important how old you are or in what environment you grew up. To engage with music as a result of learning an instrument can bring your brain in a healthy state of ongoing change. People that are "without any talent" for music do not exist. Everyone can engage with music and enjoy it. I can teach Piano: - involving sheet music or not, depending on what you prefer. - or/and Music theory lessons - or/and Improvisation - or/and Jazz - or/and Ear Training - or/and Composition. The lessons can be held in English or German or a mixture of both. I teach close to Friedrichstraße in Berlin. The lessons can be done via Skype too. You can read about me as a performing musician here: Julius (*1995) is a German pianist and composer, graduated from the University of Arts Berne in Switzerland in 2017 with honors. In July 2019 he finished his Masters in the European Jazz Masters Programme through the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen with exchange semesters in Berlin and Amsterdam. Throughout his studies, he was lucky enough to receive artistic guidance by Colin Vallon, Django Bates, Harmen Fraanje, Simon Toldam, Peter Bruun, Greg Cohen, and Michael Moore. Julius was granted a scholarship by Lyra Stiftung Zürich in 2015 and 2016. Tours with his own bands have been supported by different fundings from Switzerland and Germany. He performed all across Europe during the past years.

Sarah
Piano Lessons for all ages and in different languages
Hello! my name is Sarah. I have a certificate in Classical Piano Performance. I have years of experience in teaching music in different languages (Arabic, English, German and French). In 2020 I finished my master's in Music Therapy in Germany. At the end of my studies, I did my research on online music playing and wrote my thesis on music interaction through online platforms which gave me a great deal of experience when it comes to online teaching. In my online lesson, I use several cameras from several angles to give the student the chance to see what I am doing. My lessons (Live and Online) are fun and very beneficial, and all my students showed fast progress

Noah
Querflötenunterricht und Holzbläserimprovisationen Flute Lessons and Woodwind improvisation
Hello! I am a Canadian from the West Coast and I have recently made Berlin my home. I am excited to offer flute lessons here, because I have a lot I can teach. I have taught for a few years in Toronto, Canada where I hold a degree in music. To begin with, all my lessons are grounded in body and mind awareness. I strive to impart to my students an ability to stay centred. My knowledge comes both from my teachers in the past, my experience teaching, my experience playing, practising, and performing, on the flute and other instruments and the study of Alexander technique, Tai Chi, and yoga. The insights I share are always unique to each student, as each student will have particular strengths and weaknesses with sound production and technique. At the base of all my lessons is what’s most fundamental— developing a rich expressive tone through the control of the respiratory apparatus. What I do differently from other teachers is incorporating both the “classical side” and the “jazz side” in my lessons. Through the “classical side“ we will approach expression, clarity of tone, phrasing, and breathing through the interpretation of music. Through the “jazz side” we will work on developing a basic working practical theory with improvisational exercises, which you will be able to apply both to improvising your own music and interpreting other’s music. My desire is that my students don’t become “caged” into the notes on the page, but are able to freely and fully express themselves on their own. Ultimately, the two sides meet in the ideal of all my teaching—to help bring out my student’s voice. This is the art which the great performers of the world have mastered— communicating with their own voice. With this, it won’t matter whether you’re playing your music or someone else’s— it will sound like “your own”. If you or your child are completely new to the flute, or you have played for many years and have gotten stuck with what to do next, or if you play an entirely different woodwind instrument and want to learn about improvising, , please contact me I have no doubt I will have a lot I can help you with. 🙂 I spent many years in the notes-on-the-page-cage, and I broke free, so I can help you do the same.

Piano and Guitar Classes for Entry levels, Beginners, and Intermediates
I teach Entry level/Beginner/ Intermediate Piano and Guitar lessons with a focus on different styles, techniques, and rhythms from a broad base of musical genres. Classes are designed for aspiring musicians with some musical background and also those with little or none. Each lesson is designed to keep the student at the peak of their abilities by giving both challenging new pieces and reinforcing their own technical skill. I also put some emphasis on incorporating students' own personal musical tastes and styles to bring their passion to the music they want to play. In the first lesson, we can get to know each other and you can get an idea for how the lessons will be taught while letting me know what elements you'd like to focus on in the future.

Stefano
Singing Lessons (Individual) - Pop, Jazz, Soul, Blues, Rock (in AMSTERDAM)
In my classes you will be deciding what to study, how to learn and in which way you want to approach singing and music in general. You will have the freedom to set up a plan and reach the designated goals with the help of my support. I will show you and teach you different singing techniques and guide you towards finding your personal and unique voice. I will adapt to your needs and will help you to achieve and surpass your goals! I strongly believe that the voice is an all-powerful instrument. It converts the invisible into the visible; it transforms emotions into sounds. The voice is subject to continuous evolution. It's a beautiful instrument that offers so many possibilities in terms of expansion.

Learn Piano and Improvisation and practice other languages :)
The most important matter that I could write here about is my passion to teach. I've been teaching already for more than 10 years, from kids to adults. I'm a classical pianist, but I am opened to other musical styles. What I want you to get from your lessons with me, is not only a huge knowledge of theorical stuff or a great technique, I would like to show you my musical world, the imagination and inner exploration that is required to understand and to love music in a whole new level. Once you have found them, it will be very hard to quit playing! The class duration: You can choose! 20 minutes (Great for the youngest : 3 years old) 30 minutes (Ideal for young beginners from 4 years old) 45 minutes (Intermediate+ adult beginners) 1 hour (Intermediate and combined with some Music Theory) I use different methods depending on: 1) The goals of my student 2) The language that we will use on class 3) Age and musical preferences: I start to teach children from 3 years old, we make games and they learn to play through musical stories that I have created throughout my pedagogical career.
