Trusted teacher: Preview the poem by reading the title and paying attention to the poem's form: shape on the page, stanzas, number of lines and ending punctuation. Read poem aloud several times to hear rhyme, rhythm, and the overall sound of the poem. This makes it easier to understand the poem. Inferring is how we enter into those holes and spaces as we read. When we infer, we figure out what the author might have meant when information isn’t explicitly stated. In Strategies That Work, we make inferences by combining our background knowledge with clues from the words on the page. Novels tend to be easy to read. You can sit down and become absorbed by a book for an hour or more. Poems, on the other hand, typically require slow and careful study to glean their full meaning. The lines of a poem tend to be more complex, more “packed with meaning,” than lines of text in other types of literature.

Trusted teacher: My classes involve a mixture of discovering poetry in its diverse forms and responding to writing exercises. All activities have the aim of expanding the student's personal relationship with this incredible art form and developing their power to self-express creatively. We will look at how poetry continues to challenge the status quo and can act as a space for connection, emotional healing and rebirth in climates of limitation and struggle. I am passionate about teaching poetry writing because I have seen how beneficial the sharing and crafting of poetry is for mental health; I want to bring this passion into people's lives and am as excited to learn from each student's insights and creations as I am to impart knowledge and feedback. I am an experienced tutor and published poet with a first-class honours degree in English and Spanish from Durham University. My anthology "Poems of Hope", on the subject of mental health, was published in 2019 to fundraise for Mind UK. I am currently studying part-time postgraduate course in teaching creative writing with Cambridge University to complement writing and teaching. I have 5+ years of experience tutoring English and have devised and delivered poetry workshops for vulnerable adults as well as tutored creative writing throughout the pandemic. I have also spent a year working with SEN students in secondary education as a teaching assistant. I welcome teenagers and adults who identify as neurodivergent, disabled or struggling with mental health. I hope to hear from you and look forward to journeying into poetry together.

Have you ever drawn with words - or write with drawing/ mark making? In each session, we will look at techniques to develop both drawing and writing skills to produce an image/ prose to be proud of. The aim is to then use this creativity to address the demands of every day living - to find a moment of calm amidst the punishing to-do list we give ourselves. Trusted teacher: In the modern world, the significance of poetry is overlooked. From Aristotle to Derrida (the range is not comprehensive), literary theory has maintained that a poem's power is measured in its affect. Throughout this course, our goal will not be to make inscrutable poetic analysis - though the first part of the lesson will be spent analysing word choice, meter, line length and spaces of an English poem written between pre-modernism and postmodernism. Rather, through our perusal of poetic form we will be able to ground our work, somewhat modestly, in the English poetic tradition. Before the first class you will send me some of your own work so I know how to build or refine aesthetic temperament. I have been writing poetry for ten years and two years ago I published a chapbook at a press with competitive standards, and I am currently working on a full-length collection. If you wish to take up poetry seriously, time is needed and an eye for detail is essential. I look forward to us broadening our aesthetic sensibilities together.

Trusted teacher: Poetry is as much a tool of personal expression as it is a creative discipline. While the importance of learning about style, stanzas, and sibilance is undeniably important, so is discovering your own authorial voice. These sessions are designed to support you in discovering what makes your poetry 'yours'. Together we will look at examples of other's poems to dissect how the authors use various techniques and linguistic devices to construct poems before looking at how to apply those devices in ways that help us achieve our desired outcomes. We will also break down what poetry means to us individually, recap different types of and form within poetry, complete writing sprints, and more. You will also have the opportunity to 'workshop' examples of your work with me, if desired. I first had poetry published in 2016, and have been featured in several magazines and journals in the past few years - throughout 2020/21 I was featured in a number of publications including the prestigious Train River Publishing Quarterly, Creatures Magazine, Felan Zine, Fresh Froot mag, and more. I am also versed in writing prose and lyrics, and I have extensive experience teaching English.

When we learn about poetry at school, the type of work we're encouraged to read is extremely limited, with the focus falling mainly on long dead authors and outdated forms. In this masterclass we'll look at a range of contemporary poetic practices, with a particular focus on erasure poetry, and begin to move away from what we've been taught and what we think we know. Sharing a range of example pieces by established poets, I'll show you how the language and materials that we find all around us can be used to create poems that exist at the intersection of literature and visual art. After exploring some of the creative techniques and processes involved in the making of erasure poems, you'll have an opportunity to create one of your own using a piece of text of your choice. We'll finish the class with a discussion about the process and anything else that feels useful to you. While I welcome participants with all levels of experience, those joining should have a strong interest in poetry and be looking to develop their practice, whether that means making their first ever poem or exploring an unfamiliar form. Those with existing experience of working with erasure should get in touch with me prior to booking to find out if the content of the class is right for them.
