Fundamentals of music: Composition lessons for beginners

For many people improvisation is a scary word and having to improvise in a group or band is an alarming prospect. However, this really does not need to be the case. As long as you have a basic knowledge of how to play your instrument you will be able to improvise. Once you know the principle of how chords are formed you will soon be improvising with ease. If you play a keyboard instrument you will be able to improvise your own pieces and be able to entertain your friends at a moments notice. On the other hand if you play in a band or a group you will be well equipped to do a real 'jam' session. Whether you play a single line instrument (flute, saxophone, trumpet, violin etc.) or keyboard instruments, this class is for you.

As a music lover, I would love to share key teachings for piano and percussion, being very practical in everything related to Musical Language, and yes, it is like a language, in the end you improve by practicing the "language!" Of course, it is key for enjoying live instruments, in my case I have all kinds of percussion instruments (drums, flamenco cajon, rain stick...), a piano and two guitars, quite a group!

I have previously taught students ranging from children to elders, in various guitar styles including jazz, rock and pop. I worked as a Core Music Tutor at Berklee College of Music, where I provided individual, hourly tutoring sessions. During the class time I assisted the students in completing coursework and projects in subjects like Fundamentals of Ear Training, Music Fundamentals, Music Application and Theory, Harmony 2-4, Ear Training 1-4, Solfege 1-2, Arranging 1-2, Tonal Harmony and Composition 1-2, Art of Counterpoint, and Conducting 1. During this job I got certified by the College Reading and Learning Association through trainings offered in the program. I would describe my teaching philosophy as organic and holistic. I believe that with unlimited content at their fingertips, people today tend to be overwhelmed by the amount of information, whereas I consider it should be a mix between knowledge and perceptual approach. I understand the student needs its own time to digest knowledge and incorporate it.
