English tutor: as a preparation for exams or just to learn

Teaching is my passion, and as a native speaker, I've had the pleasure of connecting with students worldwide, starting from my experiences in the Czech Republic where I used to teach English to children. I prepare students for tests like DELE and SIELE, tailoring my approach to your unique goals—whether it's acing an exam, exploring the world, or simply diving into language and culture. Here we learn together from the vocabulary how to speak fluent English and add some grammar so that this learning journey is not stressful, but very joyful. I am an American living in Leuven, Belgium. I used to be a cheerleader back home in Louisiana, and have always worked with children. I have a master's and bachelor's degree in history and am currently completing a second master's in social and cultural anthropology. Teaching is one of my passions and I would love to be able to share that while living here.

Salvē, my name is Carlotta and I have 7 years of experience in tutoring. Nowadays these continue online, which in my experience does not reduce the quality or results in any way. Since April 2022, I have been taking Latin language acquisition courses at Schola Latīna, an Italian private school that uses the comprehensible input (CI) method. This means that all lessons are taught exclusively in the target language, allowing me to not only translate Latin, but also speak and write it. Since no Flemish school expects active language skills, I will of course not do this unsolicited during lessons ;) In practice the same problems always return: difficulties with translation, difficulties with memorization of sequences and vocabulary, lack of motivation or fun. When such a fantastic profession is experienced as difficult, it is only logical that motivation also drops. Whatever the problem, Latin itself is a perfectly feasible subject. I also tutored mathematics and noticed that students only have fun when they are no longer struggling, which is what we are working towards :) My goal is to be less needed as quickly as possible by learning and practicing strategies. I am an electrical engineering graduate from South Africa and have specialized in Computer Operating Systems Engineering. I have been living in Belgium for 6 years now and have noticed how the majority speaks English and making mistakes in English language tenses and grammatical errors, and moreover I think the young and old deserve a chance to learn this world recognized language as it is a world lingua-franca. I run private English classes for individuals and siblings. The sessions are designed for beginners and elementary students and are packed with active games, focused activities and stories - all in English. I use reward charts and positive reinforcement to keep students motivated, and use lots of images, hand gestures and expression to help them learn as quickly as possible. The classes are designed for 4 - 7 year olds with a basic understanding / no understanding of English. They can be adapted for older students. I am a British native speaker with an English teaching qualification (CELTA - Pass A: highest grade) from International House London and a BA (Hons) Performing Arts degree (First class: highest grade) from Bath Spa University in England. I have been helping students learn English since 2012, including spending a year teaching English through theatre and creative activities in Beijing.

Economics classes for University level students will be based on student's needs (some suggestions: Econometrics, Microeconomics, Quantitative Economics). For school students, it can involve advanced learning or basic Economic knowledge (aligned to student's needs). English classes will involve writing and speaking practice (based on the student's existing knowledge). I tend to explain things pretty well. I always try to assign homework for further practice. Times can be discussed with me and I do accommodate students based on mutual availability.

I offer classes for two different groups: - Young adults preparing for TOEFL/GRE with sessions focused in solving exercises from the exams and improving the student's skills - Academic English for researchers and people in academia, where we focus on methods, format and language of academic texts. Sessions could be focused on review the student paper A little about myself. I am Ph.D. student in Electronic Engineering at Imec, Leuven. I lived in the USA twice, as an exchange Student at MIT for a year and as a J1 worker at McDonald's for 3 months. I have scored 103 and 112 in the two times I did the TOEFL exam, and I scored at the 99% math percentile in my GRE score. I was born in Brazil, thus Portuguese native speaker, and I have lived in Leuven for two years, so we can communicate in basic Dutch.
