History tutoring and exam preparation for 11+, 13+, GCSE, IGCSE, A-level, IB and University Applications

I am a first class graduate of History and Politics at the University of Manchester, having received an A* at A-level in History. I have a passion for all things past tense, and that reflects in the enjoyment of past students' in my lessons. I have been tutoring History for 3 years during my time at university, and have decided to continue this now I have graduated.

I have a great deal of experience helping students gain entry into some of Manchester's most competitive schools, such as Manchester Grammar, Withington High school and St Bedes. My favourite level to teach, however, is GCSE and A-level History, where I believe a tutor can go into a level of detail that is not covered in class, and allow for a greater quality of essay reflecting this deeper understanding of a period. This understanding is inevitably reflected in essays, in which I will also coach a structure of writing that is suited to both exams at the time, and help with a-level and university level further down the line.

About Me

Thinking outside the proverbial box is essential when writing about history. This is what I have learnt, and what I now come to expect from my students looking to achieve their best possible grade. To approach things in a linear A-to-B fashion is essential in some instances, which is why I also place a strong onus on essay writing and structuring. However, I have found that the best students, and the same goes for top teachers/academics alike, find ways to integrate the opaque and often omitted sections of history into such a formulaic structure.

My course will teach students to, first, understand the basics of their historical period, so as to not make costly mistakes that could hamper their grade, then it will move on to the structural side of essay writing, which I have come to find many struggle with. Before finally moving onto the art of venturing outside of the writing norm, finding nuances within their historical period which sets them apart from those simply regurgitating information copied and pasted from a textbook.

I enjoy talking about history, and hearing others talking about history. I have always found that the best way to understand a topic is by having a conversation about the in's and out's of the period. Finding peculiar links that possibly would not be spotted when assessed in the confines of a classroom.

Experience / Qualifications

2 years experience in tutoring in my local area, started with low-level tutoring for Maths and English GCSE's. Also took part in a 'Peer-Mentor' scheme at the University of Manchester where I acted as a mentor for a group of 15 first years, this involved me reading over the groups essays and offering them feedback. I am pleased to say that each of these students is currently thriving at the University and I still keep in touch with them.

Discussion of a Book, a Short-Story, a Poem, or a Movie.
In this class, we analyse and evaluate works of narrative art together. This is how it works: Before each meeting we agree on a short-story or a poem to read (or listen to), or a movie to watch in preparation for the session. If it's a book, it has to be one which we've both read in the past. We can easily determine our mutual reads through apps like Goodreads or Library Thing. The aim of this course is to exercise your capacity for critical and evaluative thinking. By the end of this course, you should be able to produce (in speech or in writing) a coherent and methodical review of a book of fiction, poetry, or a film.

history, geography, archaeology, art history.
History is the vector that allows us to better understand our society, the world in which we live. It is essential for general culture. The level of the course will adapt to the level of the student, from primary to university. It is also possible to adapt it in relation to an exam or competition to be taken, or to a person wishing to complete their general knowledge on a particular subject.

Ask me about Jamaica! Are you curious to learn more about Jamaica- to go beyond Reggae and Jerk? Its history, people, politics and culture?
Ever wondered about life in Jamaica beyond the lights of Kingston’s allure? This class offers an ethnographic journey of practises and cultures in rural Jamaica, illustrated through photos, songs and videos. Let's explore life in rural Jamaica! Born and raised in a remote rural district/village, I will take you on an authentic journey of first hand experiences- reliving fond childhood memories, the stories my grandmother told me and what a typical day is like. This will be grounded in the history and culture of Jamaica. Coming from a background in diplomacy, sharing about Jamaica's culture and historical experiences has always been essential for opening the door to a deeper unerstanding. I have an avid interest in other cultures and always take the time to explore wherever I go. Having been to South and Central America, Asia, North America and Europe, I know the unique value of such rich experiences. Whenever I was home-sick while posted abroad, talking about my homeland was the only cure. I will share with you all there is about living in rural Jamaica, from different perspectives of my childhood, teenage years and adult life. One unique bit is that the district's enduring small farms form the centrepiece around which everything revolves. Come prepared with a curious mind, and if you want to make notes take your pen and paper or do so on your devices. It is important for me that your are learning, so I encourage you to ask questions. Let's go beyond Kington's enigma!

My students will learn how to write the proper way.
I teach English writing the way the student can understand it. I give written examples, and show the student how I put together a sentence, and see if they understand it. I can also breakdown the many components of writing and show it in different steps to make it clear to them. For students needing help with essay or creative types of writing within their school classes, I usually have them show me what needs to be done, and move forward from there. It is easy to show the student something when it is related to their class assignments as this gives them a general idea as to how they should approach writing related to their project. First of all, I ask the student what they are having difficulty with when it comes to writing. I also have them present me with their assigned school work so I can see what they are requiring to do. It is always a good idea to keep the written examples short and basic for proper understanding. I ask questions based on what is making it hard for the student to write something, and try to get as much feedback from them regarding whatever written assignment they have been given to complete. My goal is to guide the students in the right correction for their understanding, growth as writers, and being successful during their final exams.
