I've been a tutor for 2 years, and over the course of this time I have taught everything from maths, to 11+ exams, to GCSE science! But this course is for those looking to improve their close reading inference skills in English. The sessions are structured similarly to a university seminar for close reading, where each week we select a text (this can be prose, poetry or drama) and we spend the session analysing the extract without context, primarily focusing on descriptive technique, structural technique and atmosphere. This is recommended for those with an interest for English Literature at a higher level, and is a collaborative session where you can get stuck in and analyse with my support.

Trusted teacher: Holder of a Master's degree in Letters and endowed with a solid experience in private lessons, I provide French lessons for students wishing to: - consolidate their bases in grammar, spelling - improve their language skills (allophone students) - improve their speaking skills (conversation classes) -profect the written expression - prepare for ECR exams - prepare for the written examinations at the end of the studies (maturity, certificate of completion) - help with the writing of works of maturity (or other works of end of studies), of dissertation - work on argumentative texts - acquire a method to analyze literary texts - learn how to perform bibliographic research The course material is a Google Docs document that I create in which my explanations, possible links, exercises appear. By reading it regularly, progress will be faster. It can also be used in addition to other documents (files printed by school teachers and/or books) and has many advantages: automatic updating, downloadable on tablets and smartphones, simultaneous monitoring of what is writing. For help with writing: The objective is above all to acquire effective tools. The student will thus be able to learn to structure his ideas, argue coherently (and convincingly) and enrich his vocabulary. It is essential for me to have written work from the student between each lesson. For analyzes of oral literary texts: In order to optimize the time available (and to put ourselves in conditions closest to oral exams), we choose together an extract from a work that the student will have previously prepared before the lesson. This would take around 20 minutes at most, and ideally just a little before the meeting time. If necessary, I have the habit of taking a paragraph at random which would serve as a basis for analyzing a passage. For the corrections of end of studies work: so that the meeting with the student is at the most profitable, I ask him to send me his writings before the meeting. Apart from my presence with the student, any course involves a preparation time before and after the lesson, including the work that I correct. My goal is to design an individualized course, so I take the time to write detailed comments on corrected work or tips to ensure maximum success for everyone. For example, an editorial correction can easily be the subject of a detailed commentary of 4 typewritten pages. For adults (FLE): In order to optimally prepare the first ones, I take the initiative to inform myself in advance of their objectives / expectations. Whether to practice speaking in everyday life, the professional world or to practice oral presentations, I prepare either PPT or technical sheets in advance that I send by mail ( after booking on the website). The other alternative is to make a PV of the course that I send (or that I print). Giving importance to keeping a written record on the one hand to better memorize the topics covered, on the other hand to better assimilate the spelling. Of a general nature, a concrete situation that responds to the learner's needs is the starting point. From this situation, I address the essential grammatical points.

English Literature, while being a fun and engaging subject, can be equally daunting - especially when getting your ideas down on the page! This class is designed for Scottish High school students, ranging from National 5 to Advanced Higher level, and offers support with how to approach textual analysis, essay writing skills, proofreading, and exam techniques so that your ideas can be conveyed in the best way possible. I have a first-class MA undergraduate in English literature from the University of Edinburgh, so am up to date with contemporary literary theory and debates. Furthermore, I sat the Scottish National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher English exams myself, and achieved A's, as recently as 2018 so I have an understanding of what the courses entail. I have tutored privately for three years, and am available in person and over Zoom. My approach to teaching English is a collaborative one, allowing for an open discussion of your aims and needs. I can tailor to what each person struggles with in class while providing the information and structure needed to excel in examinations. Furthermore, I will proofread the folio work required for the exam. I find that with this approach, students gain the confidence and skill set needed to tackle their examinations and thrive.

It can understandably be difficult for students to make an accurate and effective interpretation of novels and poems; with my help, I aim to build confidence within others to come up with a highly academic response to whatever the question may be. To do this I will be there to talk you through the process, providing examples and help throughout to ensure you meet your goals and ace your next exams! It can imagine it be rather condescending for me to highlight my skills, but I wasn’t always the best at literature. Initially, I often struggled with interpreting novels and poems, but I had found an effective way for me to learn and be able to process these interpretations without external cues. I desire to pass on my knowledge to others so you can excel in your studies and achieve the grades you want.
If you are interested in learning or fine-tuning your English, I am happy to share my knowledge in English language, culture and literature, as well as my experience in language-learning as a process. In the past years, I have lived in different places (Italy, Finland and The Netherlands), an experience through which I got to learn about adapting to a new language inside out. Additionally, I have studied my Bachelor's and Master's in English, so if you feel like learning through coming in contact with Philosophy or Political Writings, I have much content to share!

****I can teach general exam techniques for other exam boards however I am most familiar with Edexcel content and exam requirements**** Commonly confused with English Language, English Literature explores ideas presented through plays, books and poetry. Whether you’re a book worm, theatre-lover or someone who’s fallen out of love with reading, there is a place in my class for you. I’ll break down each text in chunks in order to understand each story or idea the author has presented. That way, we can go beyond just reading and writing simple ideas about a text, we can begin to explore more complex concepts. Being able to draw your own conclusions from a piece of text based on evidence you’ve found is a key aspect of English Literature. There really is no wrong answer as long as you can prove it! In that sense, I encourage detectives of all abilities to take a stab at these classes! I’ll teach you about form, structure, writing techniques, and many more. Most of all, I’ll teach you exam timing, and how to approach a question with confidence and in timed conditions.
