During the lessons we can learn to work with different programs, such as Logic, Pro Tools or Ableton. The lessons are for students of all ages and levels. Knowledge of solfège is not required. Students will have the opportunity to investigate technical and stylistic conventions across a range of contemporary western popular music genres and to study key elements such as chord progressions, structure, harmony and melody, to develop their confidence and own abilities in composition. These sessions will explore musical composition techniques used in popular and contemporary music. The focus will be on deconstructing different works, exploring what their musical elements are and investigating what commonality these have across the boundaries of genre or instrumentation. Students will have experience of composing original musical elements and arranging these elements into complete compositions.

This is done with a music program called a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) in which you can edit sound. But as everyone has noticed who starts such a program: it's not easy! Hundreds of buttons and menus and a specific workflow ensure that you do not just get the sound you want. I use and teach two of the most widely used DAWs: Ableton Live and Studio One, which take us through all the steps from recording sound, using samples to editing and mixing. Due to my studies at the Rock Academy and the Musicology department of the UU and my more than ten years of experience as a professional guitarist, bassist and music producer, I have extensive knowledge of all aspects of the professional field.
