Any method you choose, you will have plenty of time to read through quickly before engaging in activities and a class discussion. Learners can participate in a timed comprehension exercise as their skills advance. After they've read the short narrative, I give them a worksheet or packet to complete. You could also record yourself reading the story out loud, or I can record my students reading and play it back to them.
