Bass-guitar, Music Theory and Solfege (Ear-training) Lessons from Professional Bassist

I offer private lessons in e-bass, music theory, solfege (ear training) and composition, or any combination of those.

Programs are custom made to provide the students musical wishes (bring in the songs you want to learn!), and also include my own made exercises.

Location: my studio in Berlin-Reinickendorf (U6 Kurt-Schumacher-Platz)

Languages: English, German or Dutch

These classes can be taken separately or in any combination.

Bass lessons:

I teach from complete beginners up to aspiring professionals. I like to focus on the musical interests of the student, you can bring the songs that you want to learn! Of course I also have my own propositions, as well as a big repertoire of exercises I created myself.

Some of the stuff we will work on: getting a nice sound, playing with groove and feeling, a good technique to play more efficiently and prevent injuries, timing, improvising bass-lines on chord structures, bass soloing, the different bass techniques (fingerstyle, slapping, popping, palm-mute, plectrum, playing chords a.o.), understanding how the equipment works.

Music theory:
First there was music, and the theory came second. None the less, knowing some theory is very helpful for both the amateur and (aspiring) professional musician. Theory lessons focus on chords, scales, rhythm, harmony, music notation, basic piano skills and the understanding of how they all come together.

Solfege (ear training):
In these classes your ears will be trained to be more conscious about what they are hearing. Recognizing different tones will greatly help your improvisational, composing and general music skills. We will practice to recognize and understand; melodies, harmonies and rhythms.

Composition:
Writing is more then just inspiration. We will work on improving your compositions, writing new ones and looking at examples from others. Basic piano skills, music notation, instrument functions, strong melodies, bass lines, harmonies and 'how to get inspired' are all things that we will discuss.

About Me

Education - beginning

My musical life started at age five. After a brief stop at the drums, I decided to play the piano. From age six till thirteen I followed classical lessons. At this time I also started writing my first short compositions. I enjoyed the piano a lot, but after holding a bass once during a school class, I decided to study the bass. I formed my first bands in high school, and discovered that one of my favorite things to do is to improvise. This let me to the conclusion that I should study jazz music.

Education - higher

After high school, at age eighteen, I got admitted at the prestigious Prins Claus Conservatorium's ´New York comes to Groningen´ jazz program, which I graduated in 2015. In this program I had the opportunity to get taught by and play with a big variety of the top musicians of the New York jazz scene. As part of the European Erasmus program, I followed one year of my studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in Leipzig Germany. Here I received private composition lessons by jazz pianist Richie Beirach, which have influenced me a lot.

What I do now

After finishing my bachelor in music, I moved to Berlin where I became an active session musician on the scene. I'm primarily active in Pop, Neo-Soul, Rock, Jazz and their related genres. Besides playing gigs and recording sessions for other artists, I make my own music, teach private lessons, give workshops and coach bands.

My Vision

To me, music really is a language. Musicians who have never met, can improvise together, create music and portray a feeling. Or, a carefully crafted story can be retold night after night, with the same intensity. This is why I am interested in creating as much sound varieties as possible, to be able to speak in all situations.

This has led me to learn all the common roles of the bass, but also to bend the use of the instrument. I do this by using less common techniques and different effects: analog, digital and physical (see for example 'Sounds of a Dying Elephant' with my trio, or the impro and RootNEIN recordings at My Music section on my website). This search for sound varieties has also led me to play analog synthesizers.

Sara
A concert pianist and PhD student giving piano lessons
Being naturally very skilled in sight-reading of music scores, I've realized numerous times how helpful and enjoyable can be to posses that "gift". Now, after being professor to many student of different level and aspiration, I can surely say that, despite their different ambitions in playing piano, all of them were very keen in learning how to be better in reading completely new and unknown music to them. Currently, I'm developing an approach which could efficiently help one in understanding better the composition seen for the first time, through "scanning" analysis and use of logical patterns. I'm a concert pianist with rich performing experience on worldwide stages, 1st prize winner of more then 30 international piano competitions in Europe and USA, holding Master and Postgraduate degree, currently finishing PhD and program for Concert musician at Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel.
