Guitar lessons and music theory lessons in Rotterdam

Alex has a bachelor's degree from the Rotterdam Codarts conservatory. Besides that he also obtained a diploma in pedagogy at the Amsterdam conservatory. This combination makes it possible for Alex to convey his knowledge of music to his students in a pleasant way.

Alex has enough experience, he has more than 10 years of experience in teaching music in music in Rotterdam and its surroundings. He has gained this experience by giving private lessons and classes at various music schools.

Alex excels in providing acoustic guitar lessons and music theory lessons. If you are looking for the best guitar lessons in the Rotterdam area, then Alex is the right address. Read more on his website to get an impression of the lessons and the teacher.

Alex's priorities through the lessons are development, motivation and interest. It's very important that there is a constructive evolution in the pupil's playing, a constant will to move forward, as well as pieces/songs that inspire him or her.

It's important that the pupils learn through an efficient and personal method, but also through their own interest and repertoire (wishlist).

In a teaching lesson the focus is put on :

- guitar posture, technique and sound
- timing and rhythmic feel
- strumming and grooves
- interpretation
- theory and knowledge of music
- improvisation
- repertoire (on student's wishlist)

There are three dimensions to a student's programme : scores, tutorials and coaching.

Having a Master's degree in Jazz composition (Rotterdam), Alex designs the scores himself, making arrangements of pieces / songs in an accessible way, along with his method and exercises for guitar technique. The scores are written with a hybrid notation (music notation and tab notation), and with all the information necessary about the right and left hand.
After having agreed on the pieces / songs to be worked on, the relevant score is shared and given at the lesson. The teacher goes through it, while he also plays it live to the pupil for even more reach. He then explains what needs to be clarified in order to prepare any homework.
Finally, Alex creates a video tutorial about the piece or song that needs to be learned for the next lesson. This gives extra support when practising at home, in order to avoid any doubt and keep motivation up.

A report is then created to keep track of what has been done as well as what needs to be worked on, in order to unlock technical requirements and complete a specific repertoire in a constructive and efficient way.

Alex teaches in Rotterdam at home or at the pupil's own location ; lessons are in Dutch, English or French, for all ages and levels. The teacher mainly gives live lessons, where he works with his pupils on specific material (technique and repertoire). If for any reason a live lesson can't take place, it is of course possible to follow an online lesson. Lessons last 30 minutes or 45 minutes, weekly or biweekly.

About Me

Alex is a musician at heart and has been interested in music from an early age. He got introduced to music through his grandparents, mainly classical and jazz. He also developed a broader view on music through his parents with the genres of pop and rock.

At a young age Alex started playing the guitar and from that moment on music got a big role in his life. In the teenage years the love for music developed further and Alex has been on a discovery in various other music genres, from hard rock to flamenco and even gypsy music.

For Alex, there came a realization that music is the language of emotions, a language that goes beyond any spoken language. He then felt the urge to express himself through music. This musical way of communicating is one that Alex still cherishes and that he likes to teach to others. He prefers to do this by giving guitar lessons and performing in the Rotterdam area.

Alex is a guitarist, arranger and composer, born and raised in Brussels, Belgium. He started with classical guitar when he was 7, then he continued with jazz guitar in 2008 at the Jazz Studio, in Antwerp.
In 2010 he did a Bachelor's degree at Codarts (Rotterdam Conservatory) in World music, with latin music and jazz as his main focus of study. In 2018 he achieved his Master's degree in Jazz Composition at Codarts with Paul van Brugge, his research being about the use of live electronics in the field of jazz composition.
During and after the period of his studies, Alex continued composing and performing his own pieces and arrangements with several bands and line-ups. In 2019, he released his first album, Opalessence, with the band Childwood.
Alex also has ten years' experience in teaching guitar and music theory, and has been working in several music schools (Rotterdam International School, Rotterdam School of Music, Guitar Academy), giving lessons in the genres of steelstring/folk , pop/rock/blues, and jazz/South American music.

I highly recommend Alex as a guitar teacher! He is very knowledgable and has taught me a lot about both guitar and music theory. I always feel like I have learned a lot after a lesson with him!
Alex is the best guitar teacher ever for me! Not only he knows exactly how to guide a student according to his level ,he has so many different approaches for each individual students, I don’t have a lot of time to practice as a busy mom with a 3 year old kid, but some how he found a method really adapted my rhythm and make me grow every lesson I have without practicing at all;but also he is a very kind teacher, every time I feel like I’m having a lesson with an old friend:)) would highly recommend Alex to anyone who would like to take a guitar lesson from all levels!
I'm learning a lot from Alex. He has a strong focus on technique and sound, great lesson material and many styles in offer.
Nice, clear lessons. Focused on what I would like to learn. Outside class hours also good videos to practice at home. Recommended!

CLARINET - Improvisation - Music Theory - Music Understanding
SPECIALISED IN TEACHING ADULTS. Would you like to learn one of the instruments which have more style possibilities? Would you like to know why many composers say that is a very powerful instrument because it fits in may situations? Did you know that in the Klezmer history clarinet substituted the violin for projection reasons but also because perfectly able to imitate the human voice, crying or laughing? Would you like to discover the fascinating world of clarinet? One of my priorities as a musician is the sound. I believe that with a beautiful and personal sound you are able at every level to transmit emotion and meaning, it doesn’t matter the difficulty or the level. So I try to focus first on awareness of what’s beautiful for the student and what’s not. Then through technique and repertoire (suggestions of the student or suggestions of mine that can help to grow the student curiosity), we develop the student knowledge. Always helping the student to understand -depending on his/her the theoretical level- what we are doing, putting together music and theory. And giving tools to expand the border, at all levels. I have knowledge and experience in Jazz, Classical, Klezmer, Choro Music and Improvisation. You just need a precious element! • Music Theory I focus on having a good basics, spending as much as we need to understand every single thing, because then with times it becomes more easy. I try to help the student simplifying the material because then, we only with ourselves with a good procedure of the basics to solve any problem. Only with one lesson, you will understand what I mean. I have experience in preparing students for exams, the ones for the semester as well as any official exam; doesn't matter if you have an intermediate theory level and you want to improve, or if you would like to be stronger solidifying the knowledge you have (which is always the best option), or if you don’t know anything about notes and music concepts and you would like to be familiar with them. Maybe you are an adult who always wanted to improvise but doesn’t know where to start...? The only thing you need is a good organization -which I can provide- to reach any goal!

Vocal and Music Lessons/ Free the voice / Enjoy Singing
Two worlds I was born within two worlds, the East and the West; the folklore music of central Greece and the classical one. A major factor in the formation of my musicality comes from the tight relation of my family with Greek traditional music. However, music of any kind was always welcome at my home. Inspired by my father who is also a singer, I got involved in choir singing and started piano lessons. Opting for singing was a choice that gave me the freedom to express my mind. R’n’B & Latin At my first piano lessons, I realised how music is put on paper and the importance of it. At about the same time I started singing in the school choir of my secondary school and I kept being between the lead voices of the high school choir. That was the point where I practiced the different voice harmonies and got over my teenage reluctance by singing in front of the public. At the sweet age of 14, I developed a special interest in R’n’B and soul music. Later on, I got involved in the pop and rock scene but suddenly, Latin jazz music attracted my interest. One of the reasons I fell in love with Latin music is because I feel that each emotion is manifested at its maximum glory. Latin music is a mixture of cultures and backgrounds; it is the fusion of European harmony brought to the colonies with African rhythms like Cuban music was brought to New York. Singing as a vocal discovery I consider myself a people’s person. When teaching I have the need to welcome the student into a safe environment of acceptance where music can happen. In order for the student to let go of personal timidness, mutual trust comes with time yet is necessary. I prioritise my students’ needs; teach them the technical aspects they should know so as to develop a healthy instrument but also coach them so that they develop their taste in music. Because I have been singing various styles through my career, I believe I am quite a chameleon of styles (Latin, Brazilian, Jazz, Pop, Greek). In my lessons I find helpful to use some mini percussion so that the singer can establish an internal metronome. I am very supportive with each individuals’ needs and goals, that is why I always make a personal profile of my students and their progress and also ask them to design their personal dream board. All in all, I always use a combo of methods and adapt at the personal needs of the student. Singing for me is always a vocal discovery and this is what I would like to help my students achieve. The essential idea is to develop a healthy instrument with which you can express through the good and bad days. I have been studying with different teachers around the Netherlands (Codarts alumni) and Greece and during this time I have realised that learning can happen anywhere and anytime.

For this reason don't worry and keep having fun every day!I've left the harbour for this journey some years ago and I still see the line of the horizon very far...Why don't you get on my boat?
