Creative writing - Poetry in English - Learn how to write beautiful poetry

I am a widely published poet and experienced and knowledgeable teacher willing to give poetry classes at any level, whether you are struggling to write your first poem or are assembling a first collection. My approach is constructive, friendly and approachable.

I specialise in teaching rap skills and lyric writing. If you enjoy rap music and would like to learn how to improve your technique then I am here to help you! I have many years of experience teaching, performing and recording my own music. I sing, rap, write lyrics and perform with a band. I can cover different styles including Hip Hop and Grime. We will also cover lyric writing where I can help you with your flows and technique to create your own original material. There is an option to get custom made beats to help you create your own original tracks. I really enjoy teaching and like to make the lessons challenging and fun.

This course was originally developed for a Poetry Olympiad to train high school competitors in a crash-course. It has two components: 1. Poetry. The poems are selected for their ease of understanding and complexity of performance. Each poem is read aloud in at least two different readings, with focused training on emphasis, pronunciation, and meaning. 2. Verbal Reasoning Tests. These are commonly used to test English understanding. Each test gives a short paragraph then four statements which can be true, false, or not given. In making your decision and double-checking for what's actually being said (rather than implied) you can learn to effectively understand complex or technical English texts. The course is intended for ten sessions. An initial session will introduce the material and adjust the level of the lessons to your personal needs. Further sessions will include one poem and one verbal reasoning test. Homework between sessions will involve practicing the next poem and reading the next Verbal Reasoning Test (around 200 words).

I taught Turkish to three people before. A Greek, an Arab and a German learned Turkish with me. They began to read Turkish poems and listen to songs. One of them even gives me song recommendations. You can too. You can learn language step by step. Turkish is a difficult language. I am aware. I'm not going to crush you under the grammatical walls. Step by step, I can prove how easily you can speak a language by speaking, singing, reading poetry. Let's try it.

My classes involve a mixture of discovering poetry in its diverse forms and responding to writing exercises. All activities have the aim of expanding the student's personal relationship with this incredible art form and developing their power to self-express creatively. We will look at how poetry continues to challenge the status quo and can act as a space for connection, emotional healing and rebirth in climates of limitation and struggle. I am passionate about teaching poetry writing because I have seen how beneficial the sharing and crafting of poetry is for mental health; I want to bring this passion into people's lives and am as excited to learn from each student's insights and creations as I am to impart knowledge and feedback. I am an experienced tutor and published poet with a first-class honours degree in English and Spanish from Durham University. My anthology "Poems of Hope", on the subject of mental health, was published in 2019 to fundraise for Mind UK. I am currently studying part-time postgraduate course in teaching creative writing with Cambridge University to complement writing and teaching. I have 5+ years of experience tutoring English and have devised and delivered poetry workshops for vulnerable adults as well as tutored creative writing throughout the pandemic. I have also spent a year working with SEN students in secondary education as a teaching assistant. I welcome teenagers and adults who identify as neurodivergent, disabled or struggling with mental health. I hope to hear from you and look forward to journeying into poetry together.

Using my wealth of experience in creative writing, production and publishing, I will teach you everything you'll need to know about your chosen area of writing, from turning an idea into a plan, right up to getting the finished article out there. I can help to bring your poetry to life, teach you the fundamentals of publishing a short story, or even help you to self-produce a play. I prefer a collaborative approach to teaching, where student and teacher work together to bring out each others potential. I like to tailor the sessions to their interests, getting a flowing conversation and finding the core of the students needs. I feel it's most important to develop a learning plan around the student.

I studied Language Sciences and Literature in Paris, where I also did tutoring sessions for students in difficulty. I also studied Game Design and Narrative Design. Being a musician, I write song lyrics for several projects. I have been writing poetry and freelance writing for over 10 years. I am also a content creator for a French-speaking Belgian webzine; Shoot Me Again. My background in literature and linguistics helped me to have a sensitivity to language. I bring a lot of importance to the weight of the words and to the rhythm in my writings. My diverse experience has helped me build a solid background. I can teach poetry, how to write song lyrics, spontaneous writing for the Spoken Word for example but also how to structure an article, a dissertation or any other writing. Preview the poem by reading the title and paying attention to the poem's form: shape on the page, stanzas, number of lines and ending punctuation. Read poem aloud several times to hear rhyme, rhythm, and the overall sound of the poem. This makes it easier to understand the poem. Inferring is how we enter into those holes and spaces as we read. When we infer, we figure out what the author might have meant when information isn’t explicitly stated. In Strategies That Work, we make inferences by combining our background knowledge with clues from the words on the page. Novels tend to be easy to read. You can sit down and become absorbed by a book for an hour or more. Poems, on the other hand, typically require slow and careful study to glean their full meaning. The lines of a poem tend to be more complex, more “packed with meaning,” than lines of text in other types of literature.

This class is designed as an introduction to understanding poetry. If studying poetry is too complicated and you find it difficult to explain the ideas in poems, this class is a great place to start. We will uncover the ways poets use their writing to comment on life from their unique perspective.
